The event helped in driving new business opportunities for the machine tool makers in the manufacturing sector and bring out innovative machines

Even as the global machine manufacturing industry is exploring strategies to ride the current economic slowdown, Taiwan came out all guns blazing to make the 24th Taipei International Machine Tool Show (TIMTOS) a success. The event, held from March 5-10, 2013, is one of the biggest exhibitions of its kind in Asia and as a testimony to its popularity, the 2013 edition saw 1009 exhibitors (712 domestic and 252 foreign) put up 5400 booths on 100,000 sq.m area.

TAITRA (Taiwan External Trade Development Council) and TAMI (Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry) organised the TIMTOS 2013, which is the second largest machine tools exhibition in Asia. The biennial event held at two locations for want of space - Nangang Exhibition Hall and TWTC Exhibition Hall - showcased Taiwan's machine tool prowess to the world. Taiwan is the fifth largest producer and fourth largest exporter of machine tools globally, sitting among the front rankers like Japan, Germany, Italy, and China. But unlike the big four which require over 50 per cent of their production for domestic consumption, in the case of Taiwan almost 80 per cent is earmarked for exports, which explains the rather favourably skewed figures, with Hong Kong and Mainland China together accounting for a whopping 47 per cent share of the exports pie.
Call for Collaborative R&D

Speaking after inaugurating the six-day event, the President of Taiwan Ma Ying-Jeou said, "I am impressed with the growth of the machine tool industry and I am looking forward to see the further growth of this industry. I would also suggest that R&D should be improved so that more innovative technological solutions would be offered to the industry. Therefore the Taiwanese manufacturers could distinguish themselves from the competitors. Apart from this I would also like to see more collaboration between industry and academia in terms of talent management and training." Mr Jeou further said his government was working hard to improve on the existing free trade agreements with various regions countries to help exports.

Speaking about the steps taken by Taiwanese machine manufacturers, the Chairman of TAMI, John Hsu said, "Taiwan machine tool suppliers have taken one solid step at a time in pursuit of precision, speed and sophistication. The R&D is a long and tough road and the focus on one single technology might not produce outstanding results in the beginning. However, years of experience, knowledge and hard work are now coming to fruition and will push the industry forward." According to Mr Hsu, Taiwan is one of the main manufacturers of machine tools on the global stage, and is working hard to drive the world as before. The export of the machinery industry of Taiwan in 2012 was about US$ 20.09 billion, which is less by 1.8 percent when compared to 2011. However within the industry, the export of machine tools was valued at US$ 4.23 billion and it was a 5.9 per cent growth compared to 2011. Therefore, we can say the Taiwanese products are still doing well in the global market and used competitively in Southeast Asia, but now Mainland China is our main export region, he added.

According to industry experts, Taiwan is now facing serious challenges from around the world. Best products are now getting cheaper while the cheapest products are getting better. Some nations are devaluating their currencies to stimulate exports while some others are using bounteous governmental resources to help industry grow. Since the machine tool industry in Taiwan has crossed more than four decades, now it is gearing to face international market competition from Japan and Germany at the higher end, while facing the Chinese low cost juggernaut from the other end, with due diligence to take care of the entire value chain between the two ends.

In the process, it not only has been responsive to the market's needs, but has also used product differentiation strategies and developed products for the niche market. So at the one end it has created an entire range of metal cutting and forming machines to cater to the every need of the global manufacturing industry, from the other end it has also churned out high precision and high value components and aggregates for machine tools, in the process not only ending its own dependence of imports for this crucial requirement but also develop export markets for them. And the 'constant innovation' reference by President Ma during his speech is central to all these initiatives.
EMMA Myanmar

In order to assist Taiwan machinery manufacturers in developing markets, TAITRA has also been organising the EMMA Expo in India annually from 2007 to help companies in the machinery, moulding and other industries to explore the Indian market. This year in July, TAITRA would organise EMMA fair in Yangon, Myanmar. This will further help the Taiwanese machine manufacturers to explore business opportunities around the world and promote high-quality machinery products in the global market.
The export of Taiwan machines increased by 5.9 per cent in 2012 and officials believe there will be another increase of 5-10 per cent in 2013 and the key variable exchange rate between NTD and USD. The depreciation of the Korean Won and Japanese Yen against the USD is another key factor that affects the competitiveness of the Taiwanese machinery.
The Chairman of TAMI, Alan Lu, was very much optimistic about the Taiwan machine manufacturers and said, "we are conservative, but yet positive about the global market in 2013. In the European market, we expect to see growth in Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and Turkey. We also expect around 5-8 per cent increase in Brazil in the South American market and in India in the South West Asian market. We also expect good growth from the other markets also. "
Future of Machine Tool Industry

Mr Lu further stated that the machine tool industry has to work together with the government. "The most important thing for our industry is to develop high-end products, such as multi-tasking machines and 5-axis machining centres and to acquire technologies for controllers and key component software. This is how we can compete in the global market by presenting products with our own characteristics and by satisfying the needs of customisation. The government should also strongly support the development of Taiwan's machine tool industry by accelerating FTA negotiations and applying foreign exchange policies with greater flexibility, so that we can avoid putting ourselves in a disadvantageous position when facing our main competitors in South Korea and Japan."
Old is Gold
The organisers had also set up a special area at 4F Nangang Hall to showcase vintage machine tools. Machine tools from 1960s to 1980s were put on display, and the exhibits traced the evolution of the Taiwan machine tool industry through the years to what it is today. The vintage machines on display include belt driven lathes that can only be seen in textbooks today. The machines traced a diverse timeline to help remind us not to forget the past and those who preceded us. The exhibit provided a precious opportunity for the younger generation to appreciate the efforts of the pioneers and also to spur them on to continue to pursue excellence.
Excellence Award

The event also witnessed 'The Taiwan Machine Tools Industry Award 2013' which attracted 62 entries in over five categories, including NC machine tools, machining centre, CNC lathe, other NC machine tools, and components for CNC machine tools. In addition to this, an entirely new category dedicated to key components for CNC machine award was added this year. This new category has drawn participating firms like Hiwin, Taiwan Keyarrow, Gifu, Habor and Wexten. All competing products in all categories undergo three months of strict review and evaluation.
The Swiss pavilion was back for the 10th year. Also, for the first time, Germany set up a country pavilion. Further, TIMTOS had successfully invited China's Foreign Trade Federation to send its first ever exhibitor group to Taiwan. 46 buyers from 17 countries had signed up for the one-on-one procurement meeting with selected exhibitors.

On a whole, TIMTOS 2013 drew more than 6500 foreign visitors and 40,000 domestic visitors visited the six days event. One could see lot of people from the automobile industry visit the event, and representatives from China, South Korea, Philippines, Thailand, Japan, India, the United States, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore were there to check out potential business. Concurrently there were more than 30 various events and seminars held to help exhibitors and buyers to get a grip on the latest trends in the industry such as, 'Intelligent Manufacturing' and 'Industrial Intelligent Control Technologies', 'Root in Technology of Advanced Machine Tools' and 'Safety Issues for Machine Tools and Automatic Integrated Processes'. These sessions provided a knowledge-sharing platform to collectively raise the standards of the industry.
The current edition saw a strong representation from Mainland China, which is up by 93 per cent comparing to the previous edition. Secondly, the Japanese representatives were up by 36 per cent and Malaysia ranked third by 15 per cent in the total number of visiting buyers. Other countries included South Korea, India, Thailand, US, Turkey, Indonesia, Singapore and Russia.
