Slewing bearings are large-size rolling bearings that can accommodate axial, radial and moment loads acting either singly or in combination and in any direction. They can perform both stewing (oscillating) movements as well as rotational movements. (See Figure 1-1)
Inner and Outer Rings (1 and 2)
The bearing consists of an inner and outer ring made of medium carbon steel. Each includes at least one precision raceway arranged to transfer loads and relative motion from one structure of the equipment to the other. The raceways are selectively hardened to the required surface and depth necessary to transmit high stresses imposed during operation of the equipment.
Rolling Elements (3)
Precision rolling elements enable relative rotation and transmit load between the inner and outer rings. Hardened chrome alloy steel balls or rollers may serve as the rolling elements.
They are sized appropriately for the anticipated stresses and closely matched to provide uniform load distribution between the rings and minimize rotational resistance.
Spacers (4)
Spacers separate the rolling elements and are designed to minimize friction, skidding, and jamming during rotation. These conditions occur as a result of load distribution and distortion of the mounting structures and bearing rings during operation of the equipment. Spacers are generally made of a plastic material compatible with typical lubricants and operating environments.
Mounting Holes (5)
The ideal hole pattern for attaching both rings of the slewing bearings is a full circle of uniformly spaced through holes.
Seals (6)
A seal is included on each side of stewing bearings for retention of lubricant and protection of the bearing from dust and small particle contamination. The seals are made of an elastomer material compatible with most general purpose lubricants having mineral oil and greases using lithium or calcium thickeners.
Loading (Filler) Plug (7)
The rolling elements in bearings may be inserted through a hole drilled radially through the non-geared race and then plugged.
The plug is retained mechanically with a pin to assure proper orientation is maintained.
Gear (8)
Slewing bearings can be supplied with gear teeth as an integral part of either the inner or outer ring.
Grease Fitting (9)
At least one grease fitting is supplied in one of the bearing rings for periodic lubrication of the raceway and internal components.
Identification (10)
Identification consists of the bearing part number and serial number.

ABC Bearings Limited - a Brief Profile
The company was founded in 1961 as Antifriction Bearings Corporation in technical collaboration with Steyr Diamler Puch AG, Austria, for making thrust bearings. In 1998, it entered into a technical alliance with NSK, Japan, and also obtained the QS-9000 certification from TUV, Germany. The company changed its name to ABC Bearings Limited in the year 2002. In 2005, the SAP system was installed with online ERP connectivity with all offices, warehouse, and the plant. More certifications followed - ISO/TS 16949 accreditation from TUV in 2006, and ISO 14001: 2004 certification a year later.
In 2007, the company signed a joint venture with NSK-ABC. Design software like Pro-Engineer and Advance Mechanics was installed the same year and by 2008, the company began exports to Toyota - Philippines, Carraro - Italy and Dana - Italy. In 2008, the JV NSK-ABC Bearings India Limited started operations in Chennai. Progress continued with installation of Inventor 2009 design software. The company also received the Long Association Award from Tata Motors. In the year 2009, the company designed Unitised Hub Bearings for the Y1 program. More awards have followed, including the Best Cost Reduction Achievement award from TKAP and Self Certification Status from all OEMs.
At ABC, quality is the bottom line - the company ensures consistent quality and high productivity by virtue of NC/CNC machines from world-renowned manufacturers. It is actively involved in application engineering and product design to ensure consistent quality and optimum cost for its customers. The company has in-house validation system for equipment and process used in manufacturing.
