India advances military and space ambitions with major orders in September

A key highlight was the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approving 10 capital acquisition proposals worth Rs 145 billion, including the procurement of Future-Ready Combat Vehicles (FRCVs) to enhance the Army's mobility and firepower.
September 2024 marked a transformative month for India’s defence sector, with a series of strategic procurement and development initiatives by the Government of India aimed at bolstering military strength and accelerating space exploration.
A key highlight was the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approving 10 capital acquisition proposals worth Rs 145 billion, including the procurement of Future-Ready Combat Vehicles (FRCVs) to enhance the Army's mobility and firepower. Additionally, the DAC cleared the acquisition of seven Project 17B stealth frigates for the Indian Navy, worth Rs 700 billion, reinforcing maritime defence and surface warfare capabilities.
The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) also approved a major contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the supply of 240 AL-31FP jet engines, valued at Rs 260 billion. These engines will support the operational readiness of the Indian Air Force’s Sukhoi Su-30MKI fleet, with 30 engines to be produced annually, reducing dependency on foreign suppliers.
India’s space aspirations received a significant boost with the government approving Rs 227.5 billion for upcoming missions, including the next lunar mission, Chandrayaan-4, a Venus exploration mission, and the establishment of an Indian space station. Additionally, the development of a next-generation launch vehicle was approved, signalling India’s growing ambitions in the global space arena.
The Indian Navy saw notable advancements with Cochin Shipyard launching two anti-submarine warfare shallow watercraft and the Ministry of Defence sanctioning Rs 25 billion for the construction of extra-large unmanned underwater vehicles.
In September, strategic collaborations also took center stage. Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) formed a joint venture with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to provide maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services for Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) systems. India further strengthened maritime cooperation by signing an agreement with the South African Navy for submarine rescue assistance.
PTC Industries secured a key order to supply titanium cast components to Israel Aerospace Industries, solidifying India's role in the global defence supply chain. In a further boost to domestic manufacturing, the Small Arms Factory secured an export order for 2,000 medium machine guns from a European buyer, while the Indian Army placed an order for 700 Trinetra drones, highlighting the push for indigenous drone technology.
In aerospace developments, Dassault Aviation announced plans to establish an MRO facility near Noida for Rafale and Mirage fighter jets, supporting India’s air combat capabilities. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) awarded a Rs 154 million contract to MTAR Technologies for the manufacture of full-scale and sub-scale combustors for air-breathing engines, advancing propulsion technologies.
India's growing influence was reflected in the Asia Power Index, where the country surpassed Japan to become the third-most powerful nation, further underscoring its rising economic and military clout.
