The 9th edition of Clean India Show will be back in the IT city of Bangalore this December after a gap of about six years. Organised by Virtual Info Systems Pvt Ltd, the Clean India Show has many firsts to its credit. It is for the first time that many industrial cleaning solutions will be showcased along with commercial cleaning products.

In a major initiative to provide comprehensive solutions to industries under one roof, the Clean India Show-2012 will showcase:

  • Commercial and institutional cleaning - equipment, tools, chemicals
  • Industrial cleaning solutions - cleaning in process, component cleaning, shop-floor cleaning, etc
  • Waste and wastewater solutions
  • Pest management, and
  • Washroom hygiene

When one talks of cleanliness inside and outside an industrial manufacturing or process facility, the concept often gets restricted to the cleaning of floors, common areas or the premises. But today, when it comes to any industry very high quality standards are applied not only for the general cleaning but also for the process itself and also for the cleaning of parts for processing, assembly or storage operations. The presence of impurities and contaminants resulting from manufacturing processes could hamper the quality, functionality and service life of the product, thus escalating production costs and reject rates.

Many of the cleanliness and quality specifications to be followed today in industries like automotive manufacturing, aircraft engineering, electronics and ancillary component supplies are much more stringent than they were many years ago. The modern manufacturing operations have to comply with environmental protection codes and emission control norms as well.

The danger of chemical spillage is always a risk in most big industries. Adherence of smaller debris to machineries may cause damages if they are not removed fast. Some equipment need to be applied with antibacterial agents to ensure that they function well during operational hours. In many industries like textile individual vacuum cleaning is not effective in collecting the air-borne particles and dust.

What Industrial Cleaning Can Do?

Benefits of industrial cleaning:

  • Increased productivity
  • Increased equipment reliability
  • Reduced risks of breakdowns and disasters
  • Reduced downtime, and Reduced the cost of insurance premium.

In any manufacturing or process industry, the contaminants include carbon, aluminium powder, dust particles, hard grease, textile fibre, oily film, waxes, paint layers, soot, smoke, residue of the product processed, corrosion and rust.

The cleaning techniques range from spray and immersion cleaning to steam cleaning/ degreasing, dry ice blasting, high-pressure jet cleaning, heavy duty vacuuming or ultrasonic cleaning.

Choice of the Right Cleaning Process

It is very important to know what cleaning equipment and method are to be used for each industrial cleaning requirement. For example, the purpose of cleaning in electronics industry is to improve product lifetime, increase reliability of assemblies and allow coating and encapsulating operations to be carried out efficiently. All electronics components and PCBs cleaning are done through ultrasonic cleaning. Anti-static or anti-tarnish cleaning by liquids is done inside the manufacturing units for PCBs. High pressure cleaning is used in the assembly area, while vacuum cleaner is used to remove dust. Ultrasonic precision cleaning system is used in medical industry too.

Spray cleaning is used mainly on large parts with larger (plain) surface area. The cleaning medium, usually of the aqueous type, is applied to the surfaces to be cleaned at a high flow rate or high pressure through a system of nozzles. Steam degreasing is suitable mainly for removing oil and grease from part surfaces. This process is recommended especially before downstream processes such as painting, coating, application of adhesives, etc. The dry cleaning (air blowing) method provides is often employed in coarse chip removal or drying applications.

In CO2 Snow Jet Cleaning, CO2 snow removes film-type and solid surface impurities through a combination of chemical, thermal and mechanical properties. The dry ice blasting process uses ice pellets as a cleaning medium instead of liquid carbon dioxide. In plasma cleaning, various reaction gases are employed, usually to remove thin layers of organic contamination.

Industrial steam cleaners are very efficient in cleaning and sanitizing food processing lines -- conveyors, chains, belts, rollers and packing, refrigeration systems and drains and pipes. Industrial high pressure jets are increasingly used in automotive industry and also cleaning high-rise windows.

Centralised vacuum cleaners, mostly customized, are built into the production units in industries like textiles and cement. For cleaning the factory premises of very large units in Cement or Steel industries, industrial road sweepers of very high capacity are deployed. In heavy industries, the concrete flooring gets damaged due to movement of heavy loads and material spillages. Special Concrete Polishing machines are required to restore the floors.

The forthcoming Clean India Show at KTPO Exhibition Complex will offer number industrial cleaning equipment suitable to various industries. A full day seminar on Industrial Cleaning is also scheduled for December 14 at the venue. Along with this session, there are other relevant sessions as well for the industries. There will be a seminar on waste recycling and waste management, the two vital issues being handled by all the manufacturing and processing units in India.
