Balmer Lawrie & Co Ltd - a multi unit, multi technology conglomerate under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India, has been the pioneer in grease manufacturing in the country having set up the country's first grease plant in Kolkata in 1937. The company has been a major player in the industrial segment for last several decades catering to Defence, Railways and the core sectors of Indian industry, e.g., steel, mining, power, engineering, jute, etc. The core strength of the company is its emphasis on R&D which has been responsible in formulating over 250 grades of lubricating greases and oils for Industrial and automotive applications. Besides making available the finest range of greases, oils and speciality lubricants, the company is probably the only Indian company which has set up lubricating oil and grease plants outside India and also exported technical know-how for manufacture of lubricants.

It is in recent years that the company has forayed into the retail marketing of its BALMEROL brand and has already made its presence felt in the automotive lubricant market by carving out approximately 2% market share in the bazaar segment. In keeping with the current manufacturing practices, Balmer Lawrie has been using API Group II and III base oils produced from modernized refining processes, which are best suited for the formulation of superior variety of lubricants suitable for the modern breed of vehicles. These lubricants are characterised by long drain intervals, lower oil consumption, fuel economy and reduced emissions. These aspects have been the reason of increasing usage of these grade of lubes by the discerning buyer who is willing to justify the premium paid vis-?-vis improved engine performance. The company has already added to its stable API certified CH4 and CI4 grade of BALMEROL engine oils, which are being extensively used by fleet owners and transport contractors. For the 2-wheeler segment, BALMEROL grades include high performance engine oils certified to JASO MA requirements meeting API SL and SM standards suitable for new generation bikes.

Balmer Lawrie has over the years achieved a position of eminence in formulating high performance lubricants which has enabled it to tie up with reputed vehicle manufacturers and OEMs, viz., Tata Motors, SML - Isuzu, M&M, Timken, SKF Bearings, etc. The company is looking at continuously expanding its product range and improving its service network through innovative research, sensitivity to the customer's requirements and concern for the society and environment.
