Why HVAC is required for manufacturing industries

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system helps in controlling the temperature, humidity and air quality to provide comfortable indoor environment to both employees and equipment in the buildings. Hence, HVAC system is critical for any kind of manufacturing process.

Manufacturing industry refers to those industries which involve in the manufacturing and processing of different kind of items and run various processes in either creation of new commodities and products or in value addition. The manufacturing industry accounts for a significant and bulk share of the industrial and commercial sector globally. The final products can either serve as a finished good for sale to customers or as intermediate goods used in the further production process till finalisation.

In a nutshell, most of the things which we consume are a product of manufacturing process arising out of various industrial applications.

Chemical, FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), petrochemical, automotive & ancillaries, aerospace, semiconductor, textile, pulp and paper, metal processing, wood processing, plastic and rubber manufacturers are the list of end-users considered under the manufacturing industry.

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) is important in the design of medium to large industrial and office buildings. Conditions can be regulated within the manufacturing facility with respect to temperature and humidity by deploying an HVAC system for different manufacturing units.

An efficient HVAC system makes sure that specific temperature and RH conditions are maintained in such a manner that there is no spoilage, damage to the by-products and products of undergoing manufacturing process.

They help in controlling the temperature, humidity and air quality to provide comfortable indoor environment to both employees and equipment in the buildings. Heating is accomplished by heating the air within the building using radiators, while ventilation is achieved by maintaining clean air in the space and extracting polluted air out of the space. It also keeps internal air circulating and removes excessive moisture. Air-Conditioning lowers the temperature and maintains appropriate humidity levels.

Hence, HVAC system is critical for any kind of manufacturing process. All kind of manufacturing plants must have an HVAC system to increase the productivity. Given below are examples from FMCG & pharma industry.

Global industrial HVAC market by F&B industry

The food and beverage (F&B) industry which comes under FMCG requires extensive use of hygienic, dust free, pollutant free environment and effective cooling to ensure optimal processing of highly perishable products with no damage to the final product. Optimum air conditioning is also required for the workers and employees at the manufacturing unit. Also, a right ventilation environment helps in an odorless, dust free and smoke free environment.

The air quality has a direct impact on the quality and durability of food and beverage. To mention a few, meat processing plants equipped with advanced HVAC system and energy-efficient air treatment units. The HVAC systems used in meat processing allow packaging almost at 0°C, and also disinfect the air, ie any kind of microbe, bacteria emanating from the meat plant is removed by HVAC system, thus enhancing plant productivity and product durability. This also boosts up the manpower as they feel secure and protected.

One more industry which is growing with industrial revolution is packaging industry. HVAC systems are primarily used to prevent air contamination in the food packaging industry.

The packaged food industry uses a variety of raw materials such as plastic, glass, paperboard, and aluminum canning for products which we consume on daily basis like snack items, confectioneries, meat and seafood, fruits, cheese, vegetables, and condiments etc. Since India’s consumption is growing rapidly with so much demand arising out of FMCG industry, it symbolizes the growth of HVAC industry in parallel with packaging industry. Therefore, a well equipped energy efficient HVAC system can help in keeping the packaging material free of dust, microbes, smoke etc.

This is the same thing which we observe on daily basis. Whenever we open a packet of wafers, cookies or any food material, we see the inside of packaging is ready to eat without any contamination.

Only a sufficient well equipped energy efficient HVAC system at the manufacturing unit can help in making the food material ready to eat.

Pharma and biotechnology industry

The pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry requires a hygienic manufacturing environment to ensure safety.  Every generic medicine we consume, surgical and all the medical items are manufactured in a very controlled environment with no provision to dust, smoke, pollution etc.

This is also achieved by a well defined HVAC system which not only controls the temperature and RH inside the facility but also exhaust out toxic fumes, gases etc.

This leads to continuous manufacturing at plant and also boosts the productivity of technicians and other people working there. The industry uses cleanrooms or controlled environments to manufacture medicines to prevent cross contamination between two different products or infection from microbial entry and to ensure improvement of product quality.

To sum up, HVAC system is an integral part of every industry. But we need to make sure that we follow AHRAE guidelines while designing any HVAC system. ASHRAE stands for American Society of Heating, Refrigeration & Air Conditioners Engineers. ASHRAE guidelines are followed worldwide by HVAC design engineers & consultants as it mentions the guidelines to design HVAC system for any kind of manufacturing industry.

So, if you are thinking to set up a manufacturing plant, hire an HVAC company now.
