India is the world’s third largest producer of electricity, with renewable power plants (which also include large hydroelectric plants) accounting for 34.86 percent of India’s total installed capacity. As of November 30, 2019, the national electric grid in India has an installed capacity of 364.96 GW. “Power sector is one of the most critical components of infrastructure crucial for the economic growth and welfare of nations. Power sector is aiming for export to grow by 400 per cent in next 5 years as Indian economy aims to reach $ 5 trillion by 2024. With the installed power generating capacity of 365,048 MW as of October 2019, India has emerged as the world’s third-largest electricity producer and consumer,” says Anil Saboo, Managing Director, Elektrolites Power Pvt Ltd.

 

The Indian economy, which has been expanding rapidly in recent years, is estimated to grow at six per cent a year through 2030. India’s small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs) have been one of the primary drivers to boost the economy. “The sector’s contribution to the country’s GDP is expected to increase to 22 per cent in 2020,” says Saboo.

 

Renewables in focus

 

India has set an ambitious target of generating 175GW clean energy by 2022. However, the government needs to promote storage to ensure 24X7 clean energy supply. Highlighting some of challenges before the industry, Saboo says, “Grid expansion over the next few years will be driven by the government’s ambitious plan to scale up renewable energy to 175 GW by 2022. To develop associated power evacuation infrastructure, Power Grid Corporation of India Limited along with state utilities are implementing the Green Energy Corridor project. The major emerging challenges for the grid are to adoption of smart technology, investment in technology to make grids more reliable, automation in substations, innovative tower design, digitization, technology evolution and up-gradation in infrastructure.”

 

According to him, the most promising and emerging technology which meeting with future grid requirements are artificial intelligence, blockchain, Industry 4.0, IoT and increasing grid reliability. “New technologies, evolving customer preferences, and the changing competitive landscape are leading many power companies to explore new business models. Some models may help utilities to further enable the energy transition,” he adds. 

 

ELECRAMA: A global platform

Concurrent events

 

The theme of the WUS 2020, scheduled from January 20-21, is Utility Next. There is an immediate need for utilities to evaluate how the provision and consumption of energy service would happen in future. Through WUS-2020 all participating power utilities (both public and private) can showcase best practices or unique achievements through poster sessions.

 

E-TechNxt is a leading platform of industry, policymakers & stakeholders that promotes forward looking actions on “NXT” technologies in the “electrification domain”. Electrifying growth

 

The demand for electrical equipment in India is expected to witness a significant expansion on the back of the growth of the power sector. By 2022, domestic demand for generation equipment industry is expected to be between $25-30 billion. For T&D industry, it is estimated to be between $70-75 billion. “As per World Energy Council, 50 per cent investment in energy will be done in Asia till 2030. India has the potential to increase exports of electrical equipment in world market as well as innovate new technology for energy transition in next 5-10 years,” opines Anil Saboo.
