Titagarh Rail Systems to develop driverless metro trains

A critical supplier to Indian Railways, it currently produces 1,000 wagons a month.
Recently, the operations of the Kolkata-based company have undergone expansion to accommodate its diversification efforts, particularly in the manufacturing of Vande Bharat train sets, metro coaches, and propulsion systems for the passenger railway segment.
In collaboration with ABB India, the Indian subsidiary of the Swiss-Swedish power and automation group ABB, Titagarh Rail Systems is forging ahead in the development of driverless metro trains. According to Prithish Chowdhary, Deputy CEO-Passenger Rail Systems, Titagarh Rail Systems, this collaboration enhances their proficiency in propulsion systems and rolling stock, positioning them as a pioneering indigenous firm with proprietary technology in driverless metro propulsion systems.
"This is the first time that the technology for driverless metro propulsion will belong to an Indian firm. This forms a part of our capital expenditure," Chowdhary explains. He further reveals that the company has secured orders from Surat Metro and Ahmedabad Metro, with ABB slated to provide the propulsion for these two driverless metro projects.
Titagarh Rail Systems, a newcomer in the passenger rail systems manufacturing domain, operates two facilities in Titagarh, along with a passenger rail system manufacturing plant in Uttarpara, West Bengal. The manufacturing of Vande Bharat sleeper trains will take place at the passenger rolling stock unit within the Uttarpara facility.
Acknowledging the dominance of companies like Alstom in the passenger rail systems industry, Chowdhary expresses his ambition for Titagarh Rail Systems to emerge as a market leader in this segment as well, once their capacity reaches 850 coaches per annum.
With its Bharatpur facility in Rajasthan dedicated to wagon manufacturing, Titagarh Rail Systems stands as India's largest manufacturer of freight rolling stock. Having achieved and sustained the targeted production rate of 1,000 wagons per month since December 2023, the company maintains an impressive annual production rate of 12,000 wagons, as noted by Chowdhary.
Furthermore, he highlights a recent order from the Railways for 4,463 wagons, scheduled for delivery over the next 14 months.
