Indian Railways expands Kavach deployment rights, eyes LTE upgrade

Up until now, only Medha Servo Drives, HBL Power Systems, and Kernex Microsystems had the authority to deploy Kavach. However, recent approvals indicate a significant expansion of Indian Railways' capability to install Kavach. This homegrown open-source technology mandates interested companies to develop their systems in accordance with specifications outlined by Indian Railways, as per Ashwani Vaishnaw.

Looking forward, the next iteration of Kavach will be based on Long-Term Evolution (LTE), encompassing 4G and 5G technology. Vaishnaw mentioned plans to issue two tenders in the upcoming fiscal year – one for upgrading existing Kavach networks and another for deploying the technology over an extended route.

Addressing concerns about potential conflicts affecting the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), Vaishnaw clarified that the Israel-Hamas conflict would not impact the IMEC corridor plan.

Regarding Railways' capital expenditure, Vaishnaw disclosed that they are on course to conclude the month with 70% of the budgeted capital expenditure. The entire year's work is anticipated to be completed by mid-March 2024. Furthermore, 50 out of the planned 80 Gati Shakti Cargo terminals have already been commissioned, with an additional 80 terminals slated for completion in the next 8-10 months.

Vaishnaw also foresaw an increase in footfall on Indian Railways, projecting an estimated 7.5 billion passengers for the current fiscal year, up from 6.4 billion in the previous fiscal year.

Providing an update on the bullet train project, Vaishnaw noted adjustments made to Japan's E5 Shinkansen to suit Indian conditions.
