DRDO develops biodegradable packaging solution using PBAT

India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed a new biodegradable packaging solution using polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), a polymer derived from either petroleum products or plant oils. This innovative technology, created by the Advanced Systems Laboratory in Hyderabad, is currently undergoing patent approval.

The PBAT-based packaging is designed to decompose naturally within three months, leaving no harmful residue. It offers strength and durability comparable to conventional plastics, providing an eco-friendly alternative without compromising quality. Environmental impact studies, including the International Organisation for Standardisation 17088 test, have verified the compostability of these products.

The technology has been provided free of charge to over 40 industries to encourage widespread adoption. Despite a higher production cost of Rs 160 to Rs 180 per kg compared to traditional polyethylene bags priced at Rs 140 per kg, DRDO is committed to making these biodegradable bags cost-effective through collaborations and scaled production.

Dr K Veerabrahmam, leading the project, emphasised that the initiative aims to integrate this technology into various applications such as medical waste bags, aprons, shrink films, and packing films. The pilot project serves as a model for future implementation in tourist destinations, coastal areas, and other regions across India.

This development marks a significant advance in sustainable living and environmental preservation. The extensive research and collaboration involved highlight the collective effort needed to address the plastic pollution crisis effectively.
