Defence will give a major thrust to the machine tool industry: S Sampath

We predominantly cater to internal combustion engine production, i.e. auto engine manufacturing.  But as the electric vehicle segment grows, our role gets reduced due to less of machining. But the segment is more than compensated by our role and challenges in government ‘Atmanirbhar’ – indigenously developing for aerospace/ aeroengine industries where the growth will double in the next 10 years, says, S Sampath, Managing Director, Tool Aids Pvt Ltd, which markets its products under the brand name Minimac in conversation with Rakesh Rao.

In every industry, precision and efficiency are paramount, and behind the scenes of many operations lays a crucial component: cutting tools. From machining parts in automotive plants to crafting intricate designs in aerospace engineering, cutting tools are the unsung heroes enabling precision and productivity.  Manufacturers are continually developing new materials, coatings, and geometries to enhance performance and durability. We at Tool Aids are Chennai based, possessing over 50 years of experience, specialise in the manufacture of all types of cutting tools. We are renowned for excellence in drilling, hole milling, reaming, milling forms, profiles, and threading applications. As a leader in the industry, we epitomise precision, reliability, and innovation, driving the standards of cutting tool excellence forward.

How do you analyse the status of the Indian machine tools industry at present?
The country’s defence sector is going through a major investment in developing arms/equipment with ‘Atmanirbhar’ in focus. Collaborations with countries for sophisticated, advanced machines also call for upgrading in cutting tools. An important area, aerospace has tremendous future in the next 25 years. Tool Aids is gearing up technology with machines/inspection equipment for meeting these challenges.

What is driving the demand for your products?
Tool Aids specialises in manufacturing a comprehensive  range of cutting tools, including reamers, hole mills, taps, drills, and profile cutters, available in HSS,  carbide tipped, and solid carbide variants. The company caters to diverse industries such as aerospace, automotive engine manufacturing, and general machinery. With high-quality materials like high-speed steel and carbide, it ensures optimal performance for demanding applications. Serving esteemed clients in defence, aerospace, and private sectors, its facility is equipped with advanced CNC and grinding machines, supported by precision inspection equipment. Minimac, a brand of Tool Aids is highly regarded and widely accepted across all defence units.

Tool Aids serves a select group of customers who prioritise quality assurance and import substitution. With top-tier quality control systems and machines comparable to those in Germany, we have earned the trust of our clients to the extent that some do not feel the need to inspect our tools upon receipt. Continuously upgrading our machinery to meet evolving demands, we are poised to invest further in advanced equipment to enhance our indigenous manufacturing capabilities. With an outstanding 50-year history, Tool Aids has kept every client by providing dependable services at no extra cost, such as drawing redesigns, process adjustments, and consistent quality assurance.

How do you intend to tap the automotive & auto component industries - the major users of machine tools?
We predominantly cater to internal combustion engine production, i.e. auto engine manufacturing.  But as the electric vehicle segment grows, our role gets reduced due to less of machining. But the segment is more than compensated by our role and challenges in government ‘Atmanirbhar’ – indigenously developing for aerospace/ aeroengine industries where the growth will double in the next 10 years.

How do you plan to tap other end-user industries for future business growth?
Defence will give a major thrust to the machine tool & cutting tool industries for precision and import substitutions. Railways and electronics will depend more on sophistication and upgrading our automation & robot technology.

AI, digitalisation/automation and sustainability are the buzzwords today across the industries. How are you planning to tap these trends?
Global inspection standards depend on sophisticated equipment, often from Switzerland or Germany.  By importing machines with micron–level precision, we maintain high-quality standards. While our inspection capabilities excel, there's room for improvement in manufacturing processes to fully align with these standards. With over 60 years of experience in cutting tools  across India, Sweden, and the UK, including studying machining applications in the UK, the firm excels in  conducting precise trials, redesigning tools, and providing import substitutions to ensure customer  satisfaction. For government customers bound by strict regulations, the company offers alternative materials and conducts exhaustive trials to meet precision requirements.

What are your plans for IMTEX 2025?
IMTEX 2025 will be a great venue for a grand display of the latest machine tool/ cutting tool manufacturers. This is considered as a ‘learning curve’ to see and gain on technology mutually, eagerly looking forward to once in 2 years.

What are your growth plans for the company in the coming years?
The company anticipates a significant rise in tooling requirements over the next five years, mostly due to possible partnerships in defence production with top industry participants like Tesla, GE, Boeing, Airbus, and others like JLR. This spike calls for a deliberate move to precision-focused tooling, requiring large capital expenditures in equipment to satisfy precise tolerances.

Concurrently, Tool Aids also plans its inspection tools to match these higher requirements, even if the company recognises the financial implications. By taking the initiative to address these needs, the firm sets itself up to meet and exceed its affluent clients' high standards, solidifying its position as a leader in the field ready for long-term success.
