Suzuki and Toyota to start EV manufacturing in India by 2025

Suzuki and Toyota have announced plans to expand their collaboration into the electric vehicle (EV) market with the launch of their first jointly developed EV. Production of this fully electric model is set to begin at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant in India by spring 2025. Designed for diverse driving conditions, the vehicle promises an impressive range and performance, with a four-wheel-drive system for added stability on rough terrains.

The new model will be built on an EV platform co-developed with Daihatsu, featuring a spacious interior and reliable battery power. This project marks a major step for both automakers as they strengthen their foothold in the EV sector.

Suzuki and Toyota, partners since 2016, have successfully collaborated on various products across markets including India, Japan, and Europe. This new EV, aimed at meeting the global rise in electric vehicle demand, will expand their portfolio with an electric SUV catering to modern consumers’ needs.

Koji Sato, President, Toyota emphasised the partnership’s impact: "By utilising our jointly developed BEV unit and platform, we can offer choices that contribute to a carbon-neutral society. We aim to learn from each other’s strengths and continue our multi-pathway approach." Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki echoed the sentiment, adding, "Our collaboration has deepened, enabling Suzuki to supply our first BEV to Toyota globally. While remaining competitors, we are committed to jointly addressing social issues and pursuing carbon neutrality."
