Klüber’s path in India has been marked by continuous growth: Hitendra Bhargava

How do you see the growth of Klüber in India over the years?
Klüber Lubrication has been a strong presence in India for over 25 years, consistently serving as a focal point for global lubrication solutions. Over the decades, we have made significant investments in our manufacturing footprint, research & development capabilities, and world-class quality standards. Our commitment to India has enabled us to better understand the evolving needs of Indian customers and provide innovative, high-performance lubrication solutions across diverse industries.

As part of our continued growth, we are making a significant investment of Rs 1.41 billion in a major upgradation of our Mysore plant. This expansion will not only enhance our manufacturing and R&D capabilities but also reinforce our commitment to the Make in India initiative. By strengthening local production, Klüber Lubrication is well-positioned to support customers seeking localised solutions while also enabling them to benefit from the government's Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes.

Our journey in India has been marked by continuous growth, diversification of product offerings, and an expanding presence across multiple end-user industries. With a strong foundation and an unwavering commitment to excellence, we look forward to further strengthening our position as a trusted partner in India's industrial growth story.

How is Klüber contributing to the Make in India initiative and strengthening its local manufacturing capabilities?
Klüber Lubrication has firmly aligned itself with the Make in India initiative by ensuring that a major share of our product portfolio is manufactured locally. Not only do we produce many of our globally recognised products in India, but we have also successfully developed over 100 new solutions tailored to the specific needs of Indian customers. A testament to our strong R&D capabilities, several of these India-developed solutions are now gaining traction in international markets, further reinforcing our position as a global innovation hub. Our Indian R&D team has evolved into a global competency center for key application areas, driving advanced lubrication solutions beyond domestic boundaries.

For instance, in the automotive sector, we recently launched Klübersynth LEB 94-81 NH, a groundbreaking lubricant that offers exceptional load-carrying capacity, low torque, and optimal performance in low temperatures. Innovations like these exemplify our commitment to not just manufacturing in India but also developing and innovating in India for the world.

What is the market size of lubricants in India? What factors are key growth drivers?
The Indian lubricant market consists of two distinct customer segments. The first group comprises customers who already recognise the advantages of specialty lubricants and are at the forefront of technology and innovation. The second group is in an evolving phase, still relying on commodity lubricants.

One of the major challenges with commodity lubricants is that they can limit customers' ability to optimise their designs, enhance performance, or reduce costs. Specialty lubricant manufacturers like Klüber Lubrication play a key role in bridging this gap by demonstrating the benefits of advanced lubrication solutions, helping industries upgrade their designs to meet both current and future challenges.
For industries already accustomed to specialty lubricants, our focus is on continuously developing solutions that keep pace with evolving design requirements. A key example is the electric vehicle (EV) sector, where customers increasingly seek lubricants with lower torque and higher wear resistance to improve vehicle range and extend service life. Another growing demand is for low-noise greases—as vehicle cabins become quieter, even minor vibrations and noise become more noticeable to the end user. Addressing this challenge, Klüber Lubrication provides advanced lubricant solutions that help mitigate noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) issues.

With rapid industrial advancements and the push for innovation across sectors, Klüber Lubrication remains committed to supporting India's industrial growth by delivering high-performance, application-specific lubrication solutions.

What are key challenges facing the manufacturing industries today? How is your company helping them find solutions to these challenges?
Manufacturing industries today are navigating major trends such as efficiency, sustainability, and digitalisation—each presenting unique challenges. Klüber Lubrication has been at the forefront of delivering specialty lubrication solutions that enhance efficiency, optimise applications, and support sustainable industrial growth.

One of the critical challenges industries face is enhancing performance while reducing energy consumption. Klüber Lubrication actively addresses this by offering advanced solutions that improve friction reduction, noise damping, longer operational life and corrosion protection, enabling manufacturers to optimise designs and increase overall efficiency. Additionally, our expertise in energy monitoring and saving using DIN ISO 50015 methodologies allows us to track and quantify energy savings, helping customers achieve greater operational efficiency through our specialty lubricants.

Sustainability is another key focus area. Over the past several decades, Klüber Lubrication has been consistently recognised for its sustainability efforts. In 2024, we were awarded ‘Leader’ status in the ‘Carbon Management Level’ category by EcoVadis and have consistently won EcoVadis awards since 2021. Since our 2019 reference year, we have successfully reduced our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by over 78%. Our commitment extends beyond minimising our own carbon footprint—we actively assist customers in meeting their sustainability goals, including Scope 3 emissions reduction. As a pioneer in carbon footprint transparency, Klüber Lubrication provides detailed carbon footprint data for our products, enabling customers to make informed, eco-conscious decisions that align with their environmental strategies.

On the digitalisation front, we are leading the way by offering smart lubrication solutions that help customers monitor the performance of lubricants in real time. These digital tools provide predictive maintenance insights, enabling timely interventions and reducing downtime.
By continuously innovating in these critical areas, Klüber Lubrication remains a trusted partner, helping industries overcome challenges and achieve greater efficiency, sustainability, and digital transformation.

How are you fulfilling the evolving needs of the auto industry?
The Indian automotive market is witnessing two major trends shaping the future of personal mobility. First, there is a significant shift towards Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), with an increasing number of customers preferring these vehicles for their comfort, luxury, and robust performance. Second, electric vehicle (EV) adoption is accelerating, driven by sustainability concerns and advancements in technology.
Both trends present unique challenges for vehicle designers, particularly in lubrication requirements. SUVs, with their higher loads and growing customer expectations for comfort, demand lubricants with superior load-carrying capabilities compared to previous generations. Additionally, modern consumers are prioritising safety and environmental considerations, making emissions and odor from lubricants a key factor in selection.

For electric vehicles, range anxiety remains a critical challenge due to the current state of charging infrastructure. To address this, designers and engineers rely on Klüber Lubrication to enhance the efficiency of key components such as bearings and gearboxes. By optimising lubrication solutions, Klüber helps improve overall efficiency, ultimately extending the range of EVs.

As these transformative trends continue to evolve, Klüber Lubrication remains committed to delivering high-performance solutions that meet the changing needs of the automotive industry.

Besides auto, which other industries present new opportunities for Klüber in India?
Klüber Lubrication in India has established itself as a trusted partner not only in the automotive sector but also across a wide range of industries facing challenges related to wear and friction. Our expertise extends to critical sectors such as bearing manufacturing, cement, steel, power, food, pharmaceuticals, textile machinery, and wind energy, where customers rely on us for high-performance lubrication solutions.

With a commitment to innovation and efficiency, Klüber continues to support industries in optimising performance, enhancing durability, and reducing maintenance costs through advanced lubrication technology.
