Indian Railways has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Switzerland's Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, and Communications (DETEC) to strengthen collaboration on technology, track maintenance, and infrastructure modernization. The MoU, renewed via video-conference, was approved by India's Ministry of Railways and Ministry of External Affairs.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that the MoU establishes a comprehensive framework to support technology sharing, track management, and construction advancements, aligning with India’s commitment to modernizing its railway infrastructure. Swiss Federal Councilor Albert Roesti emphasized that Swiss technology would enhance Indian Railways' efficiency, safety, and service quality.

The renewed agreement builds on an original MoU from 2017, which covered areas like traction rolling stock, EMU train sets, propulsion equipment, electrification, and station modernisation. To facilitate this cooperation, a Joint Working Group (JWG) was established, holding meetings to explore collaboration on freight and passenger cars, railway electrification, station modernisation, and tunnelling technology.

During the most recent JWG meeting in October 2023, Indian representatives highlighted ongoing railway investments, offering Swiss companies significant opportunities in India's rail sector. This partnership is expected to improve railway services in India, benefiting both passenger and freight transport, with Swiss companies contributing machinery, materials, and tunnelling consultancy.

The signing event was attended by Indian Ambassador to Switzerland Mridul Kumar, Federal Councilor Albert Roesti, and other dignitaries.
