India is a key pillar in BorgWarner’s global growth strategy: C Krishnamurthy

BorgWarner Inc is a leader in designing and manufacturing advanced components and systems for powertrain applications across the world. In this interview, Chandrasekar Krishnamurthy, Global Director of Product Management, BorgWarner, discusses the company’s expanding footprint in India and its pivotal role in the nation’s electric vehicle (EV) transformation.

BorgWarner has been actively expanding its presence in India. Could you highlight the company's current operations here and how India fits into BorgWarner’s global growth strategy?
India is a key pillar in BorgWarner’s global growth strategy. We have a strong and growing footprint in the country, with multiple manufacturing facilities (Manesar, Chennai, Gudapakkam, Talegaon, Kakkalur), engineering centers (Bangalore), and a robust supply chain network. Our operations in India support both domestic and global markets, reflecting our commitment to "local for local" and "local for global" strategies. India’s dynamic automotive landscape, skilled talent pool, and increasing focus on electrification make it an ideal hub for innovation, manufacturing, and customer collaboration.

With India’s EV sector gaining strong momentum, what are the biggest opportunities and challenges you see for EV adoption in the country from a product and ecosystem perspective?
India presents a unique opportunity for EV growth. The key opportunities lie in affordable electrification, last-mile connectivity, and government incentives that are driving adoption. However, challenges remain, such as charging infrastructure, battery cost and lifecycle, and the need for localized, robust EV components that can withstand Indian road and climate conditions. A holistic ecosystem approach involving OEMs, suppliers, policymakers, and infrastructure providers is essential to overcome these hurdles.

What specific solutions and technologies is BorgWarner offering to address the core challenges faced by Indian EV manufacturers?
BorgWarner offers a comprehensive portfolio tailored to the needs of Indian EV manufacturers. This includes:

  • High-efficiency inverters, onboard chargers, DCDC converters and integrated systems
  • Integrated drive modules (iDMs) that combine motor, inverter, and gearbox for compact and efficient propulsion
  • Vertically integrated stand-alone power modules and power switches
  • Battery systems that ensure safety, longevity, and performance
  • Thermal management solutions that are compact, energy-efficient, and optimized for India’s climate
How is BorgWarner leveraging its R&D and product innovation capabilities to support India’s transition to cleaner mobility, especially for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and commercial vehicles?
Our R&D centers in India are deeply integrated into BorgWarner’s global innovation network. We have a dedicated High Voltage test lab to support the development of our global electrification products and product platforms.  We have been continuously investing in local engineering talent across the entire spectrum of engineering competencies to co-develop compliant products for the global as well as for the Indian market. Our innovation is guided by real-world use cases, ensuring that our solutions are not only technologically advanced but also practical and reliable in Indian conditions.

Can you share any recent milestones or partnerships in India that reflect BorgWarner’s commitment to the electric mobility space?
We opened our Tech Center in Bangalore early in 2023 and enhanced it with a High Voltage Test Lab mid of 2024 to establish a strong foundation for local engineering in India thereby positioning BorgWarner to be a strong development partner for Indian OEMs.

Looking ahead, what are BorgWarner’s strategic plans to tap into India’s booming EV market?
Looking forward, our strategy is centered around three pillars:
1. Localisation: We plan to expand our manufacturing footprint to produce EV components locally
2. Innovation from India: Our Indian R&D teams will play a larger role in global product development, especially for emerging market EV platforms
3. Strategic partnerships: We aim to deepen collaborations with OEMs to accelerate EV adoption
For BorgWarner, India is a strategic innovation and manufacturing hub that will shape the future of mobility.
