With India targeting 500 GW of non-fossil power capacity by
2030 and already crossing 254 GW of renewables, the need for large-scale energy
storage has become critical. To ensure grid stability and reliability, the
country requires up to 230 GWh of energy storage capacity.
In a major step towards strengthening India’s battery energy
storage ecosystem, the company has commissioned India’s largest Battery Energy
Storage System (BESS) Gigafactory in Noida. The company has begun rolling out
BESS installations across the country, witnessing strong demand and positive
response from leading companies across multiple sectors.
At a time when global battery manufacturing is largely
dominated by China and other international players, this development marks
India’s growing presence in advanced battery storage manufacturing and aligns
with the Government of India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
GoodEnough Energy’s Noida Gigafactory represents a
significant milestone in India’s clean energy journey. With an investment
exceeding Rs 4.5 billion, the facility supports the National Energy Storage
Mission and India’s Net-Zero goals. The company plans to expand the
Gigafactory’s capacity to over 25 GWh within three years, positioning India as
a key player in grid-scale battery storage.
Outlining the company’s vision, the co-founders stated that
India’s clean energy ambitions require not only advanced technology but also
vision, resilience and collaboration. They emphasised that the Noida
Gigafactory is designed as a hub for innovation, climate leadership and green
job creation, supporting national initiatives such as the National Energy
Storage Mission and the PLI scheme to build a resilient and sustainable India.
The Gigafactory benefits from strong logistics
infrastructure and access to a skilled engineering workforce. It is expected to
create employment opportunities for local youth while fostering an ecosystem of
more than 100 small and medium enterprises as suppliers and partners,
delivering a significant boost to the regional and national economy.
With an operational capacity of 7 GWh, the Gigafactory will
support high-emission sectors such as manufacturing, infrastructure,
healthcare, mining and commercial real estate in reducing their carbon footprint.
With planned expansion, the company aims to eliminate up to 15 million tonnes
of CO? emissions by 2026.
By comparison, burning one litre of diesel emits around
three kilograms of CO?. A 125 kVA diesel generator used for just two hours of
daily backup power consumes approximately 60 litres of diesel, resulting in 180
kg of CO? emissions. In addition, every kilowatt-hour generated from diesel or
coal releases about one kilogram of CO?. At its current capacity, the
Gigafactory is designed to prevent more than 5 million tonnes of CO? emissions
annually, comparable to the annual carbon reduction target of Indian Railways.
The BESS solutions are also set to support the rapid
expansion of India’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure, particularly in
areas with weak grid connectivity. Features such as peak shaving, time shifting
and seamless integration with renewable energy sources are designed to optimise
energy costs and enhance sustainability for businesses across the country.
GoodEnough Energy has commissioned India’s largest 7 GWh BESS Gigafactory in Noida, marking a major step towards grid-scale energy storage and the nation’s clean energy goals.
