Digital data is a crucial factor in the success of connectivity: Norbert Gemmeke

The HARTING Technology Group is a leading global provider of industrial connectivity solutions, which are used to transmit data and power in numerous industrial sectors. In this interview with Rakesh Rao, Norbert Gemmeke, Senior Vice President of Global Products Development, Project Management, and Innovation at HARTING Electric Stiftung & Co. KG, highlights the importance of the Indian market and HARTING’s ongoing innovation in connectivity solutions.

What trends are visible at present in the global manufacturing sector?
In the machinery industry, we’re observing dynamic growth in Asia, particularly in car manufacturing. Countries like India are showing strong progress, and we are closely following these trends. For example, we’re adapting to developments in modular connectivity solutions, like the Han modular series, which was originally introduced a few years ago. These innovations cater to the demand for flexible and scalable solutions, which is a crucial trend for us.

HARTING is considered to be a one-stop connectivity solutions provider. Can you elaborate on that?
Certainly. HARTING has a long history of providing heavy-duty connectors. Over time, we’ve expanded our product offerings to include metric connectors and circular installations, covering everything from cabinet to field connections. We focus on delivering high-power, high-data-rate solutions, addressing the most critical trends and requirements in the market.

With the rise of green energy, what opportunities does HARTING see in this space?
We are increasingly involved in energy storage systems, especially hydrogen and battery storage, as they’re critical for the wider adoption of renewable energy. These sectors require specialised connectors, which is where we play a significant role. We have developed specialised products, in close collaboration with major battery companies, to meet the specific needs of these industries.

How important is the Indian market for HARTING? What are your expectations for 2026?
India is a critical market for us. In Chennai, we have a development centre dedicated to creating new solutions for the Indian market. The Bangalore hub supports our cross-functional efforts, such as developing AI for connectivity solutions. We are committed to the Indian market, focusing on both local development and global expansion through our operations here.

Could you explain the difference between HARTING’s development centre and innovation hub?
HARTING focuses on both product management and innovation. Our product management team works on standard product lines, while the innovation hub in Bangalore develops rapid prototypes, helping us keep pace with fast-moving market demands. The innovation hub focuses on speed, with prototypes and initial concepts ready for customer discussions within weeks. These prototypes are then handed over to product management for further development and commercialisation.

How do you see the Indian railway sector as a market for HARTING?
The Indian railway sector has been one of our key markets for a long time. As trains modernise, there is an increasing demand for advanced, lightweight, and energy-efficient connectivity solutions. Our development centre in Chennai is dedicated to railway product development, ensuring that we meet the evolving needs of this sector.

What impact do you think the recent Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the EU will have on HARTING’s business?
The FTA is a great opportunity for us, particularly in sectors like railway, machinery, and data centres. We see significant growth potential in these areas, and the agreement is expected to create new business opportunities for HARTING in both India and Europe.

How do you see the future of electromobility in India?
Electromobility is still in its early stages in India, though I believe it will grow over time. While the market isn’t as dynamic as expected, we see this sector as an emerging opportunity, and we are positioning ourselves to meet its future demands.

What can visitors expect to see from HARTING at Hannover Messe 2026?
At Hannover Messe 2026, we will showcase our energy storage systems and expanded Han modular series. Additionally, we’ll highlight how we are integrating AI and digital data into our connectivity solutions. Digital data is becoming a crucial factor in the success of connectivity, and we will be demonstrating how it can drive innovations in this space.
