British Safety Council introduces Behaviour Based Safety programme

British Safety Council has introduced its Behaviour Based Safety (BBS) programme in India to help organisations improve their safety maturity. The BBS programme is a safety initiative that takes a behaviour-based approach to reduce the occurrence of risky behaviour through observation, feedback, and positive interventions.

The BBS programme helps organisations understand behavioural safety across all organisational levels through a series of training programs. These include Behaviour Based Safety training workshops, Train the Trainer workshops and Safety Leadership Training for Senior Leaders.

Speaking about the programme, Hemant Sethi, Managing Director, British Safety Council India, said, “An organisation achieves safety maturity when everyone considers safety as a value and not just a priority. Individuals in such an organisation take responsibility for their own actions and the actions of their co-workers. The Behaviour Based Safety programme is designed to foster a holistic understanding of safety within the organisation and prepare everyone for future implementation of safety measures.”

British Safety Council’s BBS programme comprises four phases as described below:

Phase 1: Conducting a need analysis
British Safety Council experts will work with the leadership team of partner organisations to conduct a need analysis. This includes group discussions, identifying training needs, and documenting and evaluating the effectiveness of current training programmes.

Phase 2: Customising the training programme
Based on the current state of the partner organisation, British Safety Council will customise the programme based on seniority, function, industry and subject matter expertise.

Phase 3: Programme delivery
The programme is agreed upon, and delivery dates are scheduled. It begins with a day-long Senior Leadership training session, followed by a 1-day training for functional and operational leaders. British Safety Council also offers a Train the Trainer (TTT) version tailored for safety champions who can deliver the programme.

Phase 4: Continuous learning and implementation
TTT training programmes are conducted with safety champions and observers to develop and deliver half-day awareness sessions. The final phase acts as a handover from British Safety Council and ensures the behavioural safety programme reaches the grassroots of the partner organisation.

Partner organisations availing of the BBS programme can expect a sound understanding of the definition, basic principles and benefits of behaviour-based safety. Individuals who have completed the programme can self-assess themselves and understand how culture, experience, skill, attitude, belief, risk perception and personality affect safety behaviour.
