Green UPS technology now offers significantly higher efficiency, ranging from 94 to 97%, compared to the traditional 80 to 88%, marking a substantial improvement in energy conservation and sustainability.
ABB transforms the UPS sector

There has been a growing trend in recognising UPS systems as essential power backup devices, as nearly every organisation today uses computers to streamline their workflows. E-commerce, data centres, servers, and electronic and medical equipment require a high level of uninterrupted power supply, thus generating significant demand for high-power range UPS systems in India, explains Saju SR, Sr Vice President- Smart Power Division, Electrification Business, ABB India.

What are ABB’s offerings in the UPS space?
ABB offers a wide range of UPS solutions suitable for any application size and context, from server rooms to large data centres, and across various settings like factories, offices, transportation, oil & gas, and marine environments. Our standalone and modular UPS systems cater to both low and medium-voltage applications and are designed to ensure a continuous and stable power supply for critical processes, seamlessly taking over in case of normal power source failures. For tough industrial situations ABB can offer AVC (Automatic voltage conditioner) to ensure clean and constant power under extreme conditions.

What factors are driving demand?
According to the Frost and Sullivan report, India’s UPS market was valued 631 MUSD in 2022 and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.5% through 2030. In the bustling landscape of India’s residential power solutions, the home UPS market stands out as a dynamic and rapidly evolving sector. Its growth is fuelled by the increasing need for reliable power in the face of frequent outages, alongside the nation’s surge in digitisation and remote work. Additionally, being a power-deficit nation, India has a large market for power backup products. There has been a growing trend in recognising UPS systems as essential power backup devices, as nearly every organisation today uses computers to streamline their workflows. E-commerce, data centres, servers, and electronic and medical equipment require a high level of uninterrupted power supply, thus generating significant demand for high-power range UPS systems in India.

How is the booming data centre market aiding the industry's growth?
Beyond domestic usage, UPS systems have found a significant role in data centres as well. A UPS is crucial for data centre backups, providing protection against power disruptions that could interfere with workloads or even paralyse server hardware. Data centre providers are compelled to adopt UPS solutions due to the decreasing tolerance among businesses for disconnections in data transmission or data loss. Key application areas include cloud storage, data warehouses, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems, file servers, application servers, and more.

Highlight some of your recent innovations in the UPS space
ABB's recent innovations in the UPS space include the launch of the PowerScale, an online, double-conversion, VFI (voltage frequency independent) UPS that offers enhanced power protection in a compact format. It provides excellent value for money with outstanding price, performance, system reliability, and power availability. Available in three cabinet sizes, PowerScale allows users to choose the ideal capacity and required autonomy for their critical loads. Additionally, ABB has introduced the MegaFlex DPA (Decentralised Parallel Architecture) UPS solutions to the Indian market. Part of the ABB EcoSolutions™ portfolio, MegaFlex is a sustainable UPS designed according to the ABB circularity framework, tailored for high-density computing environments with the highest efficiency rating and smallest footprint. Targeting the IEC and UL markets, MegaFlex offers power ranges from 1.5 MW to 6 MW respectively, delivering excellent availability and reliability while being up to 45% smaller for the IEC version.

What are some of the emerging trends in the UPS space?
Emerging trends in the UPS space include the introduction of features that extend battery life, enhance energy efficiency, and integrate smart connectivity options. To conserve energy and reduce carbon footprints, more manufacturers are developing eco-friendly UPS solutions or incorporating eco-modes. Green UPS technology now offers significantly higher efficiency, ranging from 94 to 97%, compared to the traditional 80 to 88%, marking a substantial improvement in energy conservation and sustainability.
