Thomson expands: Entering Indian laptop market and eyeing global exports

Consumer electronics giant Thomson is set to enter the laptop market in India within the next two quarters, according to a company official. Thomson, owned by Technicolor SA, expressed confidence in the quality of manufacturing by its Indian brand licensee, Super Plastronics Pvt Ltd (SPPL). SPPL is investing Rs 300 crore to establish a fully-automated plant in Hapur, UP, to increase its TV manufacturing capacity to 2 million units annually.

Thomson plans to introduce laptops in the entry, mid, and premium segments in India, aligning with its strategic expansion. The company also contemplates exporting smart TVs and other products manufactured in India to international markets. India, a rapidly growing market for Thomson, has been a focus since the company's re-entry in 2018 through SPPL. Thomson aims to secure a position among the top five global markets.

Sebastien Crombez, Technicolor Trademark Licensing Sales and Marketing Manager, emphasised the company's interest in long-term partnerships and the potential for India to become a hub for various electronics manufacturing, including laptops and smartphones. SPPL Director and CEO Avneet Singh Marwah indicated a disruptive pricing strategy for their upcoming products, emphasising a commitment to technological innovation and collaboration with Thomson to introduce advanced products in the future.
