Tata Motors set to kick off EV production at Sanand Plant in April

Tata Motors is gearing up to initiate the production of electric vehicles (EVs) at its Sanand plant, acquired from Ford India, starting from April this year, according to a senior company official. Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, a subsidiary of Tata Motors, had acquired the Sanand facility from Ford India for Rs 725.7 crore in January of the previous year. Shailesh Chandra, MD of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, informed PTI that the company plans to kick off EV production at the Sanand facility with the Nexon EV in April.

The manufacturing plant, with an initial capacity of 3 lakh units per year, has already begun production of internal combustion engine-powered versions of the Nexon. The production capacity can be further scaled up to 4.2 lakh units per year. Chandra mentioned that the company is also exploring the possibility of producing upcoming models at the Sanand facility.

When discussing the product pipeline, Chandra revealed that the Curvv EV is scheduled for introduction around the second or third quarter of this calendar year. Additionally, he expressed the company's aim to introduce the Harrier EV and the internal combustion engine (ICE) version of Curvv towards the end of the year.

Regarding the sales outlook for the next fiscal year, Chandra predicted a 5% growth in the passenger vehicle industry. He stated that with several planned launches, Tata Motors aims to outpace the industry's growth.

On the budget wishlist, Chandra advocated for extending FAME benefits to personal electric cars, believing it would accelerate electrification growth in the country. He also highlighted the success of incentives in states like Maharashtra and Gujarat in boosting electric car sales. Addressing the issue of an inverted duty structure in EVs, Chandra emphasised the importance of resolving this concern.

In response to talks about concessions for a US-based EV major, Chandra conveyed Tata Motors' open stance, stating that the company welcomes any player willing to invest in localisation or charging infrastructure development. He emphasised that Tata Motors is not afraid of competition but seeks a level playing field for fair competition.
