Tata Motors drives future-ready workforce for EV revolution

Tata Motors, a prominent player in India's four-wheeler passenger Electric Vehicles (EV) sector, has announced an extensive initiative to prepare its workforce for the future of EV technology. The company is actively pursuing a multifaceted strategy to ensure its employees are equipped with the necessary skills for the transition to the EV landscape.

Tata Motors has set an ambitious goal of empowering more than half of its workforce with cutting-edge automotive technology expertise within the next five years. To achieve this target, the company has collaborated with educational institutions and designed specialised training modules catering to the diverse needs of its employees, ranging from shop floor technicians to line engineers and plant management. Currently, over 57,000 employees are undergoing various stages of training.

These training modules are meticulously crafted to provide employees with relevant technical and functional skills, as well as essential managerial and leadership capabilities, enabling a seamless transition into the EV ecosystem. For instance, mechanical engineers, previously experienced in Internal Combustion Engines (ICE), are undergoing training in electronics and software streams to adapt to the evolving industry demands.

During a presentation outlining the company's reskilling strategy, Sitaram Kandi, Vice President of Human Resources at Tata Motors, highlighted the importance of collaboration with technology partners and academic institutions. He emphasised the significance of tailor-made training programs, a nationwide 'learn & earn' apprenticeship initiative, and a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion. According to Kandi, these efforts are instrumental in developing and nurturing a highly skilled, future-ready workforce capable of excelling in the rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
