Tamil Nadu drives India's electric vehicle revolution

In India, Tamil Nadu has emerged as a powerhouse in the electric vehicle (EV) industry, with two out of every five EVs sold in the country this year being manufactured in the state. According to data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ VAHAN Dashboard, a total of 1,044,600 EVs were registered in the country until September 20, 2023, out of which 414,802 were produced in Tamil Nadu.

This significant achievement is attributed to leading original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as Ola Electric, TVS Motor, Ather Energy, and Ampere Vehicles, all of which have established their EV manufacturing facilities in Tamil Nadu. The state has become a global automobile manufacturing hub and is now poised for substantial growth, expecting investments totalling Rs 50,000 crore in the EV sector by 2025, leading to the creation of 150,000 jobs.

Krishnagiri district, recognised as India’s EV capital, is home to three major manufacturers. Ola Electric recorded sales of 175,608 units, while TVS Motor sold 112,949 EVs, and Ather Energy achieved sales of 77,764 units as of September 20, 2023.

Additionally, Ampere Vehicles, based in Ranipet, registered 41,757 units, BYD India in Kanchipuram recorded 1,725 units, Stellantis (PCA Automobiles) in Tiruvallur sold 1,533 units, E-Royce Motors in Coimbatore achieved sales of 1,242 units, Hyundai Motor India in Kanchipuram recorded 1,023 units, Reep Motors in Chengalpattu sold 810 units, and TI Clean Mobility in Tiruvallur recorded 391 units in sales.

With a vision to become the world’s EV capital, the Tamil Nadu government has actively supported the sector’s growth. The government has identified six cities – Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Tirunelveli, Madurai, Salem, and Chennai – for development as EV hubs. The state possesses several advantages, including a trained workforce, a robust network and supply chain of ancillary suppliers, a thriving auto and auto component manufacturing ecosystem, and strong infrastructure and logistics support systems, all of which contribute to the state's burgeoning EV industry. The government has also rolled out the Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicles Policy, 2023, further enhancing the state’s commitment to fostering a sustainable and eco-friendly transportation ecosystem.
