ROSCon India 2023 sparks innovation and collaboration in robotics community

The inaugural edition of ROSCon 2023 in India successfully convened industry experts, researchers, and robotics enthusiasts, fostering collaboration within the Robot Operating System (ROS) community. Hosted by ARTPARK-IISc in partnership with Acceleration Robotics and Rigbetel Labs, the event took place at the JN Tata Auditorium, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru last week, drawing a participation of 700 individuals from across the globe.

Over the course of two days on December 14 and 15, ROSCon India provided a historic platform for developers ranging from novices to seasoned experts. The agenda included seven showcases of innovative robotic startups, 14 talks on ROS, and four panel discussions. Topics explored the dynamic landscape of robotics in India, addressing challenges encountered by robotics startups, the importance of edge computing, and the intricacies of securing venture capital funding.

The event was a revelation of the widespread interest in robotics, underscoring ARTPARK's broader mission of catalysing innovation in the robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) ecosystem. Professor Bharadwaj Amrutur, Executive Director and Chief Technologist at ARTPARK-IISc, emphasised the pivotal role ROSCon played in uniting and fortifying the robotics community nationwide.

In addition to its significance in India's robotics journey, ROSCon set the stage for sustained collaboration, innovation, and advancements in the field. Industry leaders, including Qualcomm, Nvidia, and Analogue Devices India, demonstrated substantial support by participating as platinum sponsors.

ARTPARK, promoted by IISc, is an AI and Robotics Technology Park aimed at nurturing innovation in AI and robotics by bringing together startups, industry players, researchers, and government entities. Funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) and the Government of Karnataka, ARTPARK serves as a catalyst for advancements in these domains.

Acceleration Robotics specialises in designing customised hardware to enhance a robot's operation speed, creating custom compute architectures for high-performance robots through hardware acceleration solutions. RigBetel Labs, on the other hand, focuses on integrating cutting-edge technologies such as robotics, automation, augmented reality, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud tech, and mobile applications into various sectors.
