Noida semiconductor ‘fab’ projects receive state cabinet approval

Noida is set to emerge as a major semiconductor manufacturing hub in India, following the approval of two large investment proposals by the state cabinet. The projects include a Rs 270 billion ‘fab’ facility by Tarq Semiconductors, a joint venture with the Hiranandani Group, and a Rs 37 billion fab unit by Vama Sundari Investments (HCL Group).

The Tarq Semiconductors facility will be constructed on 125 acres in Sector 28, near the Yamuna Expressway and the upcoming Noida International Airport, and is poised to become a flagship project for semiconductor production in Uttar Pradesh. The plant is expected to boost the supply of chips essential for electronics ranging from smartphones to computers. The Hiranandani Group aims to complete construction within two years, with chip production projected to start shortly after. State and central government incentives will support the project, which also includes an 11-acre green space. Tarq has committed to continuous production for at least three years under Uttar Pradesh’s semiconductor policy.

Meanwhile, Vama Sundari Investments, a joint venture between HCL Group and Foxconn, plans to build a semiconductor facility on 50 acres in Sector 10. This plant will produce 240,000 small panel driver ICs and display driver integrated circuits (DDIC) annually. HCL holds a 60% stake, with Foxconn holding the remaining 40%.

Additionally, Bharat Semi Systems Pvt Ltd, a startup, received 50 acres in Sector 10 for a semiconductor plant under an Indo-US strategic partnership to produce critical chips for national security. This initiative follows an agreement between India and the US, signed during Prime Minister Modi’s meeting with President Biden, and will see Bharat Semi collaborate with 3rdiTech of India and the US Space Force. Bharat Semi plans an initial Rs 8 billion investment, part of an overall Rs 23.5 billion commitment, pending final approvals.

Kaynes Semicon Private Limited, a subsidiary of Kaynes Technologies India Limited, also plans an OSAT (outsourced semiconductor assembly and test) facility on 50 acres in Sector 10. Partnering with Malaysia’s Globetronics Technology Bhd, the US-based Mixx Technologies, and Aptos Technology of the TMC Group, the project will focus on manufacturing compound semiconductors, silicon photonics, sensor fabs, and discrete semiconductors.

These developments position Noida as a central player in India’s burgeoning semiconductor ecosystem, supporting the country’s mission to secure a robust and self-reliant chip manufacturing sector.
