Rome, Italy

NextChem, a subsidiary of Maire Tecnimont Group, and Paul Wurth, a company of the SMS Group, announced their plan to jointly promote the combined use of electrolysis and syngas production in the iron and steel industry. They will develop an advanced technological solution to convert natural gas into synthesis gas, known as syngas, to be used during iron ore reduction. They will promote its use in the iron and steel industries.

The companies will come together to develop an advanced technological solution to convert natural gas into synthesis gas, known as syngas (a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen), to be used during iron ore reduction. The utilisation of syngas allows for the decrease in the portion of fossil fuels required and reduces CO2 emissions in the steel production process.

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO, Maire Tecnimont Group and NextChem said that, they are proud of this agreement, which strengthens the existing alliance between Maire Tecnimont and Paul Wurth to develop low carbon impact solutions in a hard-to-abate sector like the steel industry.

NextChem and Paul Wurth will study the integration of electrolysis technology into the syngas production scheme, to produce low-carbon steel at a competitive cost.

Thomas Hansmann, Chief Technology and Operations Officer, Paul Wurth said that, together with a long-standing partner, they have taken another fundamental step towards carbon-neutral ironmaking. It is only by joining know-how that they can achieve a faster energy transition and the decarbonisation of the steel industry.”
