New Semiconductor with 10x Silicon Mobility Paves Way for Advanced Computing

Researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology in the United States and China's Tianjin University have developed a novel semiconductor utilising graphene—a material renowned for its durability, flexibility, lightweight nature, and high resistance.

Traditionally, semiconductors, which conduct electricity, have been predominantly crafted from silicon. However, silicon poses limitations for smaller electronic devices.

The newly created graphene-based semiconductor exhibits 10 times the mobility of silicon, translating to enhanced computing speed.

Published in the Nature journal on January 3, this breakthrough has the potential to reshape the semiconductor industry, as graphene not only offers superior performance but also enables the production of nanoelectronics.

Scientists anticipate that this discovery could usher in a new era of computing.
