Modi and Macron push for defence roadmap and Indo-Pacific Collaboration

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron convened on Sunday during G20 Summit in New Delhi, urging swift progress in the on-going discussions regarding the finalisation of the Defence Industrial Roadmap.

The Defence Industrial Roadmap aims to facilitate the development and production of advanced defence technologies while fostering collaboration not only within India but also among other nations in the Indo-Pacific region.

Both nations regard each other as crucial partners within the Indo-Pacific, where France maintains a prominent presence.

In a joint statement, Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude to President Macron for France's unwavering support during India's tenure as the chair of the G20, which greatly promoted inclusiveness, unity, and cohesion.

President Macron, in turn, commended India's efforts within the G20 to seek consensus on the Ukraine conflict, emphasising the importance of avoiding distractions from addressing the concerns of the Global South and not getting bogged down in political discussions within the G20.

The two leaders underscored that the foundation of the India-France relationship is built upon principles of sovereignty and strategic autonomy, a firm commitment to international law and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter, a steadfast belief in multilateralism, and a shared dedication to creating a stable, multi-polar world.

Both leaders emphasised the necessity of broadening their collaborative efforts to tackle regional and global challenges effectively.

They also engaged in discussions regarding collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region and Africa, particularly in the domains of infrastructure, connectivity, energy, biodiversity, sustainability, and industrial projects.

The joint statement highlighted their roles as problem-solvers in the Indo-Pacific, achieved through their cooperation within the framework of the International Solar Alliance, initiated by India and France, as well as the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.
