Military Cranes for Special Projects

Liebherr-Baumaschinen AG Reiden delivered four new LTM 1055-3.2 mobile cranes to the Armasuisse, the purchasing division of the Swiss Army, in February. The triple-axle mobile cranes were handed over on the company's site in Reiden. The Swiss Department for Defence, Civil Protection and Sport has now bought a total of ten Liebherr cranes in various lifting capacity classes since 1994.

The machines were built at Liebherr-Werk Ehingen GmbH and then completed at the Swiss site. In addition to minor supplements such as crates for wood and snow chains as well as cameras, additional equipment for building steel girder bridges had also been ordered.

One of the uses for the all-terrain cranes will be to build temporary bridges. Liebherr design and built consoles which are installed on the partially extended sliding beams for these special projects. A two and a half tonne girder is then placed on these and secured. A connecting yoke is also placed on the girders for driving on to the bridge. Packed like this the mobile crane drives on to the steel girder bride which is under construction and fits the elements it is carrying at the appropriate end on the piles which have previously been driven into the river bed. Whilst the crane is driven back on land and is loaded for the next cycle, a wheel loader lays the road surface.

The trainers of future crane drivers were there for induction training. Andreas Gurtner handled the project on behalf of Liebherr-Baumaschinen AG. He was the Manager of the Mobile Cranes Division in Reiden until the end of April 2013.
