Pune-based multinational corporation KPIT Technologies is gearing up to expand its operations beyond its current focus on embedded software and product engineering services for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. The company plans to become an integrated mobility sector operator, branching out into new segments such as two-wheelers and other areas.
Sachin Tikekar, President and Joint Managing Director of KPIT, emphasised the company's strategic shift toward a broader mobility focus. He highlighted the need for careful consideration in understanding specific sub-verticals within the industry to create significant value for clients. While acknowledging the similarity in technologies, he pointed out the varying business cases and applications across different sectors.
Tikekar revealed that KPIT's primary focus remained on passenger cars, constituting over 70% of their business. The company also collaborates with global commercial vehicle manufacturers, with a growing interest in off-highway vehicles driven by technological advancements and consumer preferences. Although there were no immediate plans to enter the two-wheeler market, Tikekar acknowledged the potential for expansion into this sector and other mobility-related areas in the future.
Discussing the evolving automotive industry landscape, Tikekar addressed the gradual shift toward autonomous driving, emphasising the industry's phased approach, with a focus on achieving Level 2 to Level 3 autonomy. He underscored the importance of digitisation, noting its interconnectedness with autonomous driving and its significant contribution to OEM revenues in the coming years.
Regarding KPIT's global footprint and specialisation, Tikekar mentioned certain centres specialising in specific practices such as electrical powertrain and diagnostics in Europe, and conventional powertrain in the US. However, he highlighted the trend toward globalised centres due to projects requiring diverse capabilities across various practices, reflecting KPIT's adaptability and expertise in the evolving mobility landscape.
