Johnson Matthey unveils new engineering centre in Mumbai

Johnson Matthey (JM), a global leader in sustainable technologies, has inaugurated its new Engineering Centre in Mumbai, further expanding its footprint in India. The facility will employ over 100 skilled professionals in the coming years and aligns with India’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

This new centre reinforces JM’s commitment to India as a hub for engineering and manufacturing excellence. It will leverage the country’s engineering talent to support projects across JM’s core licensing operations and emerging sectors like hydrogen, sustainable fuels, and specialty chemicals.

Maurits van Tol, Chief Executive-Catalyst Technologies,  Johnson Matthey, said, "India is globally recognised for its engineering expertise, and expanding our team here is critical to meeting the demands of our customers and advancing low-carbon technologies. We are excited to deepen our presence in India and welcome more local talent into the JM family."

The centre will focus on developing solutions that reduce carbon emissions from fuels, power generation, and hard-to-abate sectors. Key areas of interest include hydrogen, sustainable methanol, and green fuels, contributing to both JM’s sustainability goals and India’s clean energy transition.

The facility will be headed by Ramsundar Solaimalai, with its launch marked by a special event at the British High Commission in Mumbai. The reception was attended by key Indian policymakers and industry leaders.

Harjinder Kang, His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for South Asia and British Deputy High Commissioner for Western India, praised the initiative, saying, "Johnson Matthey’s new engineering centre underscores the UK’s commitment to clean growth. This venture will not only accelerate the adoption of low-carbon technologies but also exemplifies the importance of the UK-India partnership in driving sustainable development."

JM has been active in India for over 60 years, employing more than 1,000 people across eight sites in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Haryana.
