Indonesia to levy 100-200% duties on clothing & ceramics; protect domestic trade

Indonesia is set to implement safeguard duties ranging from 100% to 200% on a variety of imports including footwear and ceramics, in an effort to protect domestic industries, announced Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan.
The planned duties, averaging over 100%, aim to shield micro, small, and medium enterprises from being overwhelmed by imported goods, Minister Zulkifli explained. He expressed concerns that an influx of imports could potentially undermine local businesses.
Last year, Indonesia introduced a regulation aimed at intensifying oversight over more than 3,000 imported products, spanning food ingredients, electronics, and chemicals. However, the regulation was later repealed following objections from domestic industries citing disruptions to their access to necessary imported materials.
The impending duties are expected to affect imports of footwear, clothing, textiles, cosmetics, and ceramics, according to Minister Zulkifli. The Indonesian Trade Safeguards Committee is currently conducting investigations to determine the specific duty rates, as noted by senior Trade Ministry Official Budi Santoso.
Indonesia predominantly imports apparel and clothing accessories from countries such as China, Vietnam, and Bangladesh, based on data from the statistics bureau.
