India is set to establish telecommunications equipment manufacturing zones as the sector prepares for a revolution in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), announced Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

During the launch of Cisco's manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu, Scindia emphasised India's ambition to become a global telecom manufacturing hub and inaugurated the CISCO-FLEX manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur. He stated, "On our mission to make India the global telecom manufacturing hub, I inaugurated the CISCO-FLEX manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur."

The facility will produce Network Convergence System routers, generating high-quality jobs in the region. Products from the Sriperumbudur site will be exported to countries such as Mexico, Japan, Australia, the Netherlands, and the U.S.

Scindia highlighted India's significant achievements over the past decade, noting that mobile phone exports have surged to Rs 1.28 trillion under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. He reflected on the past, when the country primarily imported mobile phones and exported only Rs 15 billion worth. "Now, we have become the second-largest producer of mobile phones in the world, with 300 million units manufactured in India," he stated.

He also mentioned that value addition in mobile phones has increased by 20%, largely due to changes in FDI norms initiated by the government. With $39 billion in FDI, he called for a similar transformation in the telecommunications equipment manufacturing sector. "We achieved the fastest 5G rollout in India, covering 98% of our cities," he added.

Scindia further visited the Nokia Solutions & Networks campus in Chennai, where he explored innovative applications of Industry 4.0 technologies driving advancements in telecom manufacturing. During his tour, he was shown cutting-edge technologies such as private wireless, artificial intelligence (AI), and augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR).

He underscored the importance of Industry 4.0 in high-tech telecom manufacturing and commended Nokia’s dedication to promoting world-class manufacturing in India. This visit is part of India’s broader goal to establish itself as a global telecom manufacturing hub, as envisioned by Prime Minister Modi.
