India to boost sensor manufacturing with IESA-ELCIA collaboration

The India Electronics & Semiconductor Association (IESA) and Electronics City Industries Association (ELCIA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance India's sensor product development and manufacturing capabilities. This strategic partnership aims to establish a Centre of Excellence (ECoE) dedicated to sensor technologies, addressing India's reliance on imports, which currently exceeds 90%.

The sensor module market in India, valued at Rs 200 billion, is projected to reach Rs 310 billion by 2027. The ECoE will initially focus on industrial sensors, utilising advanced technologies like Micro-electromechanical Systems (MEMS), Nano-electromechanical Systems (NEMS), and various analog and digital sensors. It plans to expand into other verticals, leveraging cutting-edge semiconductor innovations.

Ashok Chandak, President, IESA emphasised the importance of this initiative for reducing imports and fostering India’s ambitions as a 'Product Nation'. Sriram Kumar V, President,  ELCIA highlighted the collaboration's role in mapping academia to industry and creating a sustainable ecosystem.

Dr V Veerappan, Chairman, IESA, remarked that the partnership would enhance India’s sensor ecosystem, promoting R&D, job creation, and technological innovation. Together, IESA and ELCIA aim to position India as a global hub for sensor manufacturing, catering to domestic and international markets while supporting the growth of the country's electronics and semiconductor sectors.
