India targets 28 nm and above chip market, says Ashwini Vaishnaw at WEF

Currently, India's primary focus lies in entering the chip market with configurations of 28 nm and above, targeting sectors such as automotive, telecom, power, and trains, according to Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Vaishnaw emphasised that there is still demand for chips above 28 nm, and India aims to capture this market before venturing into sub-7 nm chip bands. He highlighted the government's commitment to establishing a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem within the country.

Vaishnaw mentioned that India boasts around 300,000 design engineers involved in the development of nearly every sophisticated chip globally. This, he argued, makes a natural progression toward value chain and manufacturing. The minister expressed the goal of creating a complete semiconductor ecosystem in India, underscoring this vision during a panel discussion at the WEF.

Acknowledging India's growing trust on the global stage, Vaishnaw attributed this to the country's foreign policy. He highlighted India's strategic partnerships through cooperation agreements with the US, the EU, and Japan, as well as collaborations with South Korean companies in the semiconductor domain. Vaishnaw stressed that there is ample opportunity for everyone in the semiconductor market and that success depends on the importance assigned to the sector, the talent invested, and the level of focus dedicated to its development.
