On Saturday, the government announced the approval of 27 companies, including industry giants such as Dell, HP, Flextronics, and Foxconn, under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for IT hardware. Encompassing laptops, tablets, PCs, servers, and ultra-small form factor devices, the scheme is expected to drive incremental investments of approximately Rs 3,000 crore.
In response to the announcement, industry body MAIT expressed optimism about India's potential for a revolutionary leap in IT hardware manufacturing. MAIT sees this development as a game-changer, anticipating India's rise to a leadership position in manufacturing and exporting products like laptops, tablets, and servers, similar to the success seen in the mobile phone industry.
Sanjay Lodha, Chairman and Managing Director of Netweb Technologies, expressed honor at the company's recognition in the PLI scheme. Having exceeded targets in the initial phase, Netweb Technologies is now gearing up for PLI 2.0 with increased incentives, positioning the company for greater success and innovation.
The government's approval of these applications aligns with India's efforts to attract IT hardware players through policy incentives, aiming to establish itself as a global hub for hi-tech manufacturing. Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, highlighted that 95% of the approved companies, totalling 23, are ready to commence manufacturing from day-zero, with an overall investment of about Rs 3,000 crore.
The minister emphasized the shift in the value chain to India, positioning the country as a significant force in the manufacturing of IT hardware, covering PCs, servers, laptops, and tablets. Notable companies granted approval include Dell, Foxconn, HP, Flextronics, VVDN, Optiemus, Padget Electronics, SOJO Manufacturing Services, Goodworth, Neolync, Syrma SGS, Mega Networks, Panache Digilife, and ITI Ltd, among others.
Responding to queries about the absence of certain large names from the list, the minister mentioned ongoing evaluations and plans, indicating that it's a matter of time. The PLI scheme 2.0 for IT Hardware, approved by the Union Cabinet on May 17, 2023, aims to enhance India's manufacturing capabilities and stimulate exports. It is anticipated to generate additional production worth Rs 3.5 lakh crore, creating direct employment for 50,000 people and indirect employment for 1.5 lakh people.
As the scheme progresses, India is witnessing a shift towards increased value addition in the country, with complex work and design capabilities contributing to the growth of the IT hardware sector. The government envisions leveraging India's talent, skill base, vibrant market, and enabling policies to attract significant investments in IT, electronics, semiconductor production, and global value chains.
The industry is transitioning from traditional tools to automated, high-precision systems.
