Govt infra spending grows 38.8% in five years: Economic Survey

The Union Government's capital expenditure on key infrastructure sectors grew by 38.8% between FY20 and FY25, with momentum picking up between July and November 2024, according to the Economic Survey 2024-25.

India's power sector expanded with installed capacity rising 7.2% YoY to 456.7 GW by November 2024. Renewable energy capacity grew 15.8% YoY, reaching 209.4 GW by December. Average daily power supply improved to 23.4 hours in urban areas and 21.9 hours in rural areas in FY24.

Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, 120 million families have gained access to piped drinking water since its launch. The number of ODF Plus villages (model category) has reached 364,000 under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Grameen.

In urban housing, 8.9 million houses have been completed under PMAY-U, with PMAY-U 2.0 launched to provide homes for an additional 10 million households. Metro and rapid rail systems are operational or under construction in 29 cities, with daily ridership reaching 10.2 million.

Under AMRUT, tap water coverage has increased to 70%, while sewerage coverage reached 62%. The Smart City Mission has completed 7,479 projects worth Rs 1.50 trillion.

India’s space sector has 56 active assets, including 19 communication and 24 earth observation satellites. NSIL recently launched 72 OneWeb satellites and GSAT-20 in collaboration with SpaceX.

The Survey emphasises the need for enhanced private sector participation, improved project management, and stronger public-private partnerships to accelerate infrastructure development.
