From quantum leap to space age innovations, Capgemini unveils top 5 tech trends

IT services major Capgemini revealed the top five technology trends expected to take center stage in 2024, focusing on technologies poised to reach a crucial turning point in the coming year.

The year 2023 witnessed the prominence of Generative AI (GenAI) in global public and business discussions, raising expectations for its potential to drive progress in business and society. While GenAI will remain a highly discussed topic in the upcoming year, Capgemini anticipates that other key technologies will also mature or experience breakthroughs in 2024.

Pascal Brier, Chief Innovation Officer at Capgemini and member of the Group Executive Committee, emphasised the transformative impact of technology, citing GenAI as a prominent example. Brier highlighted the continuous efforts of Capgemini's teams to stay abreast of technological advancements, leveraging innovation for clients and anticipating key breakthroughs.

Capgemini outlined the top five technologies to watch in 2024:

Generative AI: After making a significant impact in the global technology and business landscape in 2022 and 2023, Generative AI is expected to fulfill the considerable expectations it has generated. The focus will extend beyond current "Large Language Models," with a growing demand for smaller, more cost-efficient models.

Quantum Technologies: As advancements in computing power progress, the need for enhanced digital defense mechanisms becomes crucial. The imminent shift in quantum technologies is poised to reshape global cybersecurity standards, impacting business leaders and technology experts alike as organisations embark on their quantum transition.

Semiconductors: The semiconductor industry is on the brink of a transformative era in 2024. With factors converging to redefine the landscape, including 2 nm chips, atom-sized transistors, and substantial investments in R&D, the industry will undergo accelerated digital transformation. This shift will bring forth new giga factories, regulations, business models, and foundry services.

Batteries: Improving battery performance and reducing costs are key objectives for businesses and governments. The emphasis is on supporting electric mobility and advancing long-duration energy storage to expedite the transition to renewable energy and smart grids. While lithium ferro-phosphate (LFP) and nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries are becoming standard, exploration of alternative technologies, such as cobalt-free (sodium-ion) or solid-state batteries, is expected to accelerate in 2024.

Space Tech: The renewed interest in space technologies aims to address critical challenges on Earth, including climate monitoring, improved telecommunications access, and defense. The new space age involves not only government agencies but also private entities, from startups to corporations. Supported by technologies like 5G, advanced satellite systems, big data, and quantum computing, 2024 is anticipated to witness increased innovation in sustainable spacecraft propulsion and the development of new Low Earth Orbit constellations for seamless communications and quantum cryptography.
