BEML, a PSU, is set to deliver 10 Vande Bharat sleeper train sets to Indian Railways by December 2024, with trials expected to commence by mid-August. The sleeper version of the Vande Bharat trains will feature all-AC coaches similar to the Rajdhani Express and will be equipped with modern infrastructure.
BEML secured the first order worth Rs 6.75 billion for these sleeper versions from Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, last year. Although the initial plan aimed for these trains to be operational by March, technical delays pushed the timeline forward. Recently, Railway Minister Ashwani Vaishnaw confirmed the trials will start by mid-August. Some components, provided by ICF, began arriving on May 15. The first prototype must undergo extensive trials and inspection by the Commission of Railway Safety. BEML expects to deliver the remaining nine rakes by September, at a rate of 2 to 3 rakes per month, aiming to complete delivery by December.
Each rake will consist of 16 coaches, including 11 AC III tier, four AC II tier, and one AC I tier. Designed by BEML, the Vande Bharat sleeper trains prioritise both aesthetic appeal and functionality across all elements, from interior panels and sleeper berths to couplers and gangways. BEML anticipates a repeat order from Indian Railways after the successful delivery of the first 10 train sets. With other competitors like RVNL, BHEL, and Titagarh expected to provide prototypes by mid-next year or later, BEML’s early delivery gives it a first-mover advantage for future contracts. Indian Railways plans to connect important cities and various routes across the country with approximately 250 Vande Bharat sleeper trains by 2029.
According to brokerage firm Prabhudas Lilldhar, BEML’s recent order win enhances its value proposition by integrating it into the Vande Bharat ecosystem. The successful execution of this order positions BEML strongly for winning new contracts, as around 400 Vande Bharat train tenders are expected to be awarded over the next 3-4 years.
