ArcelorMittal, IIT Madras forge partnership for Asia's first hyperloop test track

ArcelorMittal, the steel industry leader, has joined forces with the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, to establish what is hailed as "Asia's first" Hyperloop test track facility, as announced. Both ArcelorMittal and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS) are contributing foundational steel materials, along with their engineering, design, and project management expertise to facilitate the development of the Hyperloop test track. This groundbreaking project is set to take shape at the 163-acre Discovery campus of IIT Madras in Thaiyur, located on the outskirts of Chennai.

Collaborating closely with the Hyperloop Technology teams at IIT Madras—specifically, the student team Avishkar Hyperloop and the startup incubated within the institute, TuTr Hyperloop—ArcelorMittal is actively involved in propelling the initiative forward. Notably, the Ministry of Railways is also a key partner in this ambitious endeavor.

To bring the vision to life, ArcelorMittal and AM/NS will be contributing a substantial 400 tonnes of steel for the fabrication of a 400-meter vacuum tube at the site. The engineering prowess of AMDEC, the design and engineering arm of ArcelorMittal, will be instrumental in overseeing the project. The anticipated timeline for the operationalisation of the test facility is the conclusion of Q1 in 2024.

At the core of this collaboration is the collective mission to advance and commercialise Hyperloop technologies, aiming to create a mode of transportation that is not only high-speed but also affordable, reliable, and environmentally sustainable. This partnership marks a significant stride towards shaping the future of transportation.
