Andhra cabinet approves policy to boost drone manufacturing

The Andhra Pradesh cabinet has approved a new policy aimed at promoting the state's drone manufacturing and services sector. The policy seeks to attract over Rs 10 billion in investments, with projections of generating Rs 30 billion in revenue from drones and its associated ecosystem.

A key focus of the policy is the establishment of 20 drone remote pilot training organisations and 50 centers of excellence across engineering colleges, industrial training institutes, and polytechnic institutions. The initiative also aims to create 100 drone-related companies involved in manufacturing, research and development, skilling, training, and services.

State Information and Public Relations Minister K Parthasarathy explained that the policy, which will be active for five years, targets creating thousands of jobs and facilitating Rs 10 billion in drone exports within that period. The government has allocated Rs 5 billion to support the policy’s implementation.

The policy is also designed to train 25,000 drone pilots, generating approximately 40,000 new jobs in the sector. Furthermore, the state is developing a 'Drone City' on 300 acres in Orvakal, Kurnool district. This first-of-its-kind hub will support drone research, development, manufacturing, and testing.

In addition to the drone policy, the cabinet approved several other initiatives, including a draft bill to prohibit land grabbing, amendments to the GST Act and the Andhra Pradesh Excise Act, and the creation of the Pithapuram Area Development Authority. The cabinet also agreed to extend the area of the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) of Amaravati and raised the retirement age for judicial officers to 61, effective from November 1.
