ABB unveils Next-Gen Robots for Sustainable, High-Precision Manufacturing

Introducing the latest generation of robotic models, including the IRB 6710, IRB 6720, IRB 6730, and IRB 6740, designed to accommodate payloads spanning from 150 kg to 310 kg, coupled with an extended reach ranging from 2.5 m to 3.2 m. This expanded lineup empowers customers with a broader array of options and notable enhancements in both performance and energy efficiency.

Marc Segura, the President of ABB's Robotics Division, underscores the paramount importance of sustainable production for automotive manufacturers, as a staggering 78 per cent  of companies recognise its significance to their operations, with an additional 77 per cent  identifying it as a top priority for their customers.

Segura states, "ABB's latest quartet of robots encompasses 22 unique configurations and facilitates energy savings of up to 20 per cent, thus effectively addressing our customers' diverse requirements while affording them increased flexibility for achieving sustainable production across various sectors, including automotive, general manufacturing, foundry, food and beverage, and logistics."

This remarkable boost in energy efficiency is a result of ABB's innovative OmniCore controller, combined with a streamlined robot design, ultimately resulting in energy conservation of up to 20 per cent.

OmniCore, in addition to its energy-saving attributes, boasts exceptional motion control precision. Equipped with ABB's cutting-edge TrueMove and QuickMove motion control technology, these robots achieve unrivaled repeatability with an astonishing minimum deviation of just 0.03 mm.

These advanced capabilities render the new robot series exceptionally well-suited for intricate tasks such as spot welding, laser welding, screwdriving, and riveting, thus enabling automotive manufacturers to achieve impeccable assembly quality.

Joerg Reger, the Managing Director of ABB Robotics Automotive Business Line, emphasises the relevance of this new robot range in light of the burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) industry. As EV and battery production surges, manufacturers can select from a wide spectrum of ABB robots to ensure they possess the ideal variant for handling batteries of various sizes, encompassing individual cells, modules, and complete packages. Furthermore, these robots are adept at executing precision car body assembly and spot welding and can navigate restricted areas within vehicles for tasks like seat and dashboard installation.

ABB's impressive lineup of large robots recently made its debut at the prestigious Automatica event, marking a significant stride in the realm of robotic automation.
