Steel Plant Specialities LLP develops anti-scale coatings for metal forging process

Steel Plant Specialities LLP, an Indian firm, has recently launched its newly developed unique process to prevent scaling during hot metal forging process. This involves protecting forgings with specially developed anti-scale coatings.

Hot forging involves plastic deformation of heated metals and alloys into useful shapes like crankshaft, connecting rod, spindle, gear blanks, etc. These forgings are heat treated to achieve uniform properties. While heating for forging and heat treatment, scaling takes place. In some grades of steel, such as Ni bearing steels, scales remain adherent even after shot blasting. These scales impair surface finish of the forgings.

The new product offers improved surface finish with improvements in the surface quality of the forgings. Rejections due to scaling are brought down to zero per cent. It considerably reduces in shot blasting time in hot forging to 40 per cent due to the reduction in scaling, and obtains improved surface finish. The process of scale prevention by the use of anti-scale coating significantly contributes to cost reduction, quality improvement, reduction in rejection percentage and improvement in productivity.
