Majority of competition is located in India

Cyient was positioned in the Winner’s Circle of the HfS Aerospace Engineering Services Blueprint 2017. This reinforces the company’s substantial presence in the aerospace & defense (A&D) industry and also highlights its focus on innovation and execution, says John Kenkel, VP - Strategy & Marketing, Cyient. In conversation with Rakesh Rao, Kenkel explains the effect of Make in India initiative on A&D sector and how Cyient’s engineering solutions are helping clients to make smarter decisions.

How is Make in India initiative aiding the aerospace manufacturing sector in India?

The Make in India program is promoted by the Indian Government and is aiding the aerospace manufacturing sector in India by opening doors for global OEMs and tier 1 organisations to execute offset obligations. The A&D manufacturing sector is one of the largest and fastest growing markets in the world and Cyient is successfully building its manufacturing capabilities to facilitate the Indian designed, developed, and manufactured (IDDM) category. The initiative is also forcing engineering service companies to be more solution-oriented and Cyient has put together a Design-Build-Maintain offering that sets us apart from our competitors. We successfully engage in risk-sharing partnerships and our offices are located strategically across the globe to provide optimum delivery solutions.

What does Cyient bring to the table for its customers in aerospace industry?

Cyient is helping its customers in the aerospace industry to overcome challenges through an agile business model that leverages a global collaborative engineering approach. We work alongside our customers to reduce engineering costs, accelerate time-to-market, and increase capacity for newer technologies. Cyient also brings over two decades of experience as a risk-sharing partner in the following sectors; aero engines, avionics, interiors, aero structures, aero systems, and digital transformation using data analytics. A&D OEMs and tier 1 suppliers are improving their overall production rates and deliveries by utilising Cyient’s core engineering expertise.

Where does India stand in the global aerospace engineering services market?

The global aerospace engineering services industry is very competitive and the majority of the competition is located in India. According to MakeInIndia.com, contractual offset obligations are valued at approximately $ 4.53 billion in the next 5-6 years and India will be among the leaders in absorbing those credits. The Indian Ministry of Defence is one of the largest government entities in the world and holds a firm position in the engineering services industry.

What kind of opportunities are you looking at in the aerospace sector?

Cyient is pursuing a wide range of opportunities in the aerospace sector with a focus on end-to-end solutions. Ideally, we are looking to get involved early and often in the product development life cycle to mitigate risk and increase efficiencies. Our focus is also on Design-Led-Manufacturing solutions that range from concept to development and then aftermarket support. Cyient is looking for opportunities where we can transform the A&D product development life cycle to deliver significant value to our clients.

What are the growth plans for enhancing your services for aerospace sector?

Growth plans for Cyient include investing in developing solutions and capabilities across the entire aerospace sector. This is also in line with our strategy to provide comprehensive solutions to address the needs of evolving technologies and accelerate growth within all of our business units. Cyient plans to engage in joint ventures and strategic partnerships to stay one step ahead of the competition through global engineering collaboration. At the end of the day, Cyient’s growth will be based on delivering robust solutions, where services are just one aspect of a wider offering of a balanced portfolio of capabilities.
