India offers best RoI in the world

Strong ethics and high-quality go hand-in-hand at NRB Hydraulics Pvt Ltd - a manufacturer of fittings that are used in food, chemical, transportation and other applications in harsh environment. Sharing his entrepreneur experience with IPF’s Rakesh Rao, Noshir Bulsara, Managing Director, NRB Hydraulics Pvt Ltd, says that India is in a sweet spot with fast-growing economy and large pool of young population.

How do you view the present status of India’s manufacturing sector?

India is uniquely positioned to be the manufacturing hub of the world. Let’s take a look at the strengths India has.

It is an English speaking country. From North to South, from East to West, English is a language that is spoken and understood.

Indian families lay great stress on education, thus you will have the largest pool in the world of educated work force.

India is a ‘young country’ thus the returns on training and grooming young workforce are huge.

Indians are followers by nature thus if instructions are clear, and the leadership ‘walks it’s talk’, the learning curve will have a very early inflection point and it will be a sharp inflection.

What are the challenges & opportunities for manufacturing companies in India?

Corruption and discipline in keeping records are the main challenges. About 67 years of previous regime has pushed corruption into the pores of the businessmen and led to in-disciplined way of working. If the leadership ensures meticulous records are kept, there will be no harassment and no corruption especially as the present government is doing all it can to remove corruption.

Opportunities include low costs across the board, a work force that understands English, a young work force, a work force that will obey instructions; what more can one ask for?

What has been the effect of “Make in India” campaign and other government initiatives on the manufacturing sector?

Putting processes on line has made a huge dent in arresting corruption in the government authorities. What is best is I see pride seeping through in as much as ‘we too are good!’

Global engineering companies are increasing investment in India. What is the reason behind this?

India gives the best return on investment (RoI) in the world!

Could you share your experience as an entrepreneur?

After leaving Parker Markwel (a wholly owned subsidy of Parker Hannafin) in 2006, I started working as an agent for hydraulic hoses. In 2008, I started the business of manufacturing fittings with a partner.

The company was based on ethical dealing with all thus no bribes (in cash or kind) to anybody was a way of life in NRB. Because we were prepared to pay a fine and penalties if any, it made us very meticulous and disciplined in all areas of our operations.

The success of NRB is based on the fundamentals such as strong ethics, high quality, teach & delegate, be truthful to customers, etc.

Quality to us, is a necessary function thus our insistence on buying the best machines in the world like Mazak CNC, Finn Power crimping machine, Maximator pressure test pumps. Teach and delegate meant we need to trust our associates, we did that willingly and it has fetched us rich dividends. I have a team that is completely dependable.

Lastly, we believe very strongly in ‘bringing bad news to the table as it occurs’. There have been times where I was petrified to share bad news with our customers, but did and I was quite surprised at the appreciation we received from the customer.

Outlook for Indian manufacturing sector...
If the Indian businessmen can put the country before their own selfish needs and pay taxes they are supposed to, if Indians can inculcate civic sense and if the government can severely punish it’s employees harassing honest businessmen, India will be the leading world power in 20 years.
