Industrial Products Finder (IPF) hosted the first-ever IPF Industrial Excellence Awards last month. With a 44-year legacy, IPF recognised and felicitated the Fastest Growing Manufacturing Companies as well as ‘Products that Meet the Standards of Product Excellence’. The awards ceremony was held on 1st December 2016 in Mumbai, simultaneously with the World of Industry (WIN) India, at the MMRDA Grounds in Mumbai.

The winners for Product Excellence in various categories – Electrical & Electronic Equipment, Hydraulics & Pneumatics, Material Handling, Test & Measuring Instruments, Machine Tools, MRO & Consumables, and Special Mention – were selected based on nominations received, after careful scrutiny by an eminent jury panel including B Seshnath, Managing Director & CEO, Walvoil Fluid Power India; KP Shetty, Assistant Vice-President, Wirtgen India; Rajesh Nath, Managing Director, VDMA India; Ashok Bhardwaj, Director, JSW Steel; Girish VS, Executive Director, Institute of Supply Chain Management; and Dr KC Mittal, President & Head, Indian Vacuum Society & BARC. The winners for Fastest Growing Manufacturing Companies were selected based on financial performance over the past three years.

“IPF Industrial Excellence Awards, co-located at the WIN India is a real milestone, as far as IPF is concerned, and marks the beginning of a new thrust we are lending to the sector. The micro, small and medium enterprises is the backbone of India’s industrial landscape. There are 15 million units employing about 120 million people directly and indirectly – the largest job provider in the country. It contributes 8 per cent to the GDP and a share of 45 per cent of all manufactured output and 40 per cent of all exports,” said Mr Pratap Padode, Managing Director, ASAPP Info Global Group, a well known media conglomerate with a clutch of trade publications representing the construction, infrastructure and engineering segments, including Industrial Products Finder. Besides, the group also organises awards, conferences and events related to the industry segments represented by its trade publications.

Speaking on the occasion, Guest of Honour Shri R V Pandit, founder of Industrial Product Finder, said, “It was 46 years ago that while travelling in course of my work in New York that I came across a copy of Thomas Register, a well known US publication at a newsstand and the magazine attracted my attention as I browsed through its pages as there was no editorial of any sort but just industrial product information from cover to cover. It was then I decided India’s nascent industry needed a publication of this kind and thus Industrial Products Finder was conceived and launched in October 1972 as a monthly publication in India.” Having started as a proof reader with Jaico Publications in Bombay in 1950, Pandit later shifted to Hongkong as editor/publisher for a group of business and trade publications. As a relentless campaigner of tax reforms and liberalisation of the Indian economy, Pandit also produced in the late 1990s well known, theme-based Bollywood films like Nidaan, Maachis, Darmiyaan and Jayate, in an attempt to prove that films could be made with corporate financing.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Shri R B Gupte, Director, MSME Development Institute, said, “Industrial Products Finder is a well known publication and copies of IPF are always available at our library and frequently referred by members and visitors. Many of my colleagues have used the information published in IPF in course of their consultancy and service to the industry. I am pleased to see IPF has now entered into talent search by introducing awards in different categories. I congratulate all the award winners who have gathered here this evening.”

Delivering the keynote address, Mahesh Singhi, Founder & Managing Director, Singhi Advisors, said, “IPF has played a significant part in what I am today.” He was referring to one of his early successes, which was facilitated in no small measure by the information gathered from regular reading of the magazine. “India is a land of entrepreneurs in the SME segment and they have the ability to inspire, empower and reshape our world with innovation and foresight,” he added. “SMEs are at the centre of the Make in India initiative of the present Government and have the potential to add to the share of manufacturing sector to the GDP and employment generation exponentially.”

Summing up, Padode said, “In 2017, this event will grow in scale and we are also likely to see it grow regionally in different formats.”
