Agratas, the Tata Group’s global battery business, has
completed the steel frame at its Sanand facility in India, marking a key
milestone towards operational readiness. Production at the site is expected to
commence in 2027.
The steel structure spans 700 metres in length, 150 metres
in width, and reaches a height of 34 metres, covering a built-up area of
105,000 sq m. More than 24,000 tonnes of steel have been used in the main
structure, while work on associated buildings continues in parallel. At peak
construction, over 2,500 skilled workers were deployed on-site.
The project is being executed by Tata Projects Limited, in
collaboration with Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE) and multiple steel
contractors. All steel and most materials have been sourced domestically,
supporting Indian supply chains and reducing reliance on imports.
Quality remains central to the project, with construction
aligned to regulatory standards and industry best practices to ensure long-term
operational reliability. Structured planning and execution frameworks are also
being implemented to deliver a world-class manufacturing facility, with sustainability
integrated into the design and construction approach.
Sudhir Ghalsasi, Vice President – Capital Delivery, Agratas,
said, “This milestone reflects the scale, complexity, and pace of execution at
Sanand. What began as a vision is now taking shape through strong
collaboration, disciplined execution, and a shared commitment across teams.”
India has set a target of achieving net zero emissions by
2070 and aims to reach 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030. This
transition requires accelerated adoption of electric mobility and grid-scale
energy storage, supported by domestic battery manufacturing.
With a planned capacity of 20 GWh in its first phase, the
Sanand facility will produce advanced battery cells for electric vehicles and
energy storage applications. The project is also expected to generate
employment across production, operations, maintenance, engineering, and quality
functions, with a focus on developing local talent.
Deepak Khare, Vice President – Manufacturing Operations,
Agratas, said, “Completing the steel frame at Sanand marks an important step in
our journey towards operational readiness. Our focus now is on building
systems, processes and capabilities to deliver reliable, world-class batteries
made in India for the world.”
As Agratas progresses its industrialisation phase, the
Sanand facility is set to play a key role in strengthening India’s battery
ecosystem and supporting the growth of sustainable mobility and clean energy.
Agratas advances its Sanand battery facility with steel frame completion, marking a key milestone towards 2027 production and supporting India’s clean energy ambitions.
