Technology diversity remains central to MAHLE’s strategy in reducing greenhouse gas emissions quickly and effectively. While electric mobility is crucial, MAHLE emphasizes the need for hybrid vehicles and range extenders, alongside battery-electric vehicles, to meet global decarbonization goals. CEO Arnd Franz called for a rapid revision of CO2 legislation in Europe to accommodate sustainable internal combustion engines and climate-neutral fuels. At the MAHLE Tech Day in Stuttgart on July 23, 2025, he stressed that technology neutrality is vital to expedite climate protection, foster innovation, and preserve jobs within Europe’s automotive industry.

Technology neutrality to boost the economy and reduce CO2 Emissions
“We are fully committed to climate protection and e-mobility,” said Arnd Franz during his address to international journalists. In addition to advancing pure electric mobility, MAHLE is investing in hybrid vehicles and advanced range extenders to make the transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles easier. With significant growth of electric drive systems in China, the share of electric vehicles equipped with range extenders is forecast to grow by 15 per cent annually until 2030.

MAHLE also highlighted the untapped potential of renewable fuels, such as biofuels, in reducing emissions in the transportation sector. Franz argued that for effective climate protection in road traffic, renewable fuels must be part of the solution. By 2030, biofuels and synthetic fuels should comprise 30 per cent of road traffic fuel consumption to meet climate targets. MAHLE’s technologies already allow the direct use of renewable fuels without compromising performance.

Franz added, “The revision of CO2 legislation in Europe cannot be delayed. Sustainable internal combustion engines powered by climate-neutral fuels must be recognized as part of the solution.”

Efficiency drives transformation
Amid a volatile business environment, MAHLE is focusing more strongly on efficiency, both in its products and business processes, to enhance competitiveness and resilience. The company has successfully implemented a new global structure in just 200 days, including redefined purchasing and strengthened regional responsibilities. MAHLE’s ongoing “Back on Track 2025” program ensures continuous improvements in cost-effectiveness and profitability.

Incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations, MAHLE is optimizing both direct production and indirect processes, including product development. A notable example is the bionic radial blower for air conditioning systems, inspired by penguin flippers, which will be showcased at IAA Mobility.

MAHLE at IAA Mobility 2025
At IAA Mobility 2025, MAHLE will present key innovations under the theme “Efficiency3,” including a range extender for electric vehicles, a compact thermal management module to extend EV range, and ethanol-compatible engine components that significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Range Extender for Electric Vehicles
MAHLE’s new range extender, unveiled for the first time at IAA Mobility, will alleviate consumers’ range anxiety by providing extra power to the electric motor once the vehicle’s battery is depleted. The 85 kW system features a high-voltage generator powered by a compact internal combustion engine and is designed for maximum efficiency and compactness. The technology ensures improved market acceptance of battery-electric vehicles worldwide, offering long driving ranges of up to 1,350 km, depending on the vehicle and battery size.

Thermal Management Module Boosts Efficiency
MAHLE’s new thermal management module, also presented at IAA Mobility, improves electric vehicle efficiency by up to 20 per cent compared to systems using electric heaters. The module integrates a heat pump, air conditioning compressor, refrigerant pumps, sensors, and valves into a single compact unit, enabling efficient heating and cooling while maintaining battery charge.

Bionic Radial Blower – Form Follows Nature
MAHLE is introducing a bionic radial blower, inspired by the aerodynamic shape of a penguin’s flippers, which reduces noise by 60 per cent and improves efficiency by 15 per cent. This innovation is especially beneficial for vehicles with limited installation space and will be showcased as a European premiere at IAA Mobility.

Ethanol Engine Components for Sustainable Fuels
MAHLE continues to demonstrate its technology diversity with components designed for engines running on renewable fuels. By optimizing pistons, piston pins, rings, and valves, MAHLE has developed a power cell unit for ethanol engines that reduces CO2 emissions by up to 70 per cent while conserving resources and saving fuel.
