Centre plans vehicle scrappage policy based on pollution levels; Anurag Jain

Jain pointed out that a policy mandating scrappage after a certain number of years often raises questions from vehicle owners who maintain their vehicles well.
The Indian government is developing a new vehicle scrappage policy focused on pollution levels rather than the age of the vehicles, according to Anurag Jain, Secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways. Speaking at the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) annual convention, Jain highlighted the need for industry collaboration to ensure the reliability of pollution checks.
Jain pointed out that a policy mandating scrappage after a certain number of years often raises questions from vehicle owners who maintain their vehicles well. "Instead of age, we are considering pollution levels as a criterion for scrappage," he said.
The government is exploring setting pollution limits for vehicles, potentially based on Bharat Stage (BS) emission standards rather than age. Jain emphasised the importance of creating a trustworthy pollution testing system and urged industry stakeholders to assist in designing a robust program for pollution checks.
