What are the benefits of synthetic oil products?

As more synthetic fuels arrive on the market and researchers develop similar oil-based products, many people are curious about the potential benefits of switching to these possibilities. Learning more about the likely advantages makes consumers more likely to try something new, especially if they understand that the positive effects extend beyond themselves.

Supporting sustainability now
Sustainability is a primary driver for numerous individuals who begin using synthetic fuels for personal or business applications. People increasingly recognise that reducing emissions is a collective effort, and they can make progress by searching for fuel alternatives. Such was the case for a man who races vintage Bentleys and founded a company that sells and restores them. His granddaughter said the cars were bad for the environment, leading him to find a German supplier of synthetic fuel.

That option uses renewable raw materials and has less associated pollution than conventional products. Additionally, some race tracks only permit cars that use synthetic fuels, creating more opportunities for this enthusiast and others like him.

Elsewhere, companies have focused on sustainability from industrial decision-makers’ perspectives, creating synthetic oil products that help their equipment operate efficiently and extend asset life span. One example reduces engine wear to increase performance, minimise downtime and manage costs. When decision-makers learn about those benefits, they realize it makes good business sense to make sustainable transitions.

The formulas are often crucial for giving synthetic fuels the desired characteristics. Such is the case for one with below-average sulfated ash, phosphorus and sulfur content. It reduces the emissions associated with industrial options such as buses, delivery trucks and mining vehicles. Examples such as these show business leaders there is no need to make sacrifices when switching to synthetic oil products. Instead, they can keep equipment and operations running smoothly while simultaneously making choices that benefit the planet.

Enabling a greener future
Many dedicated researchers are interested in creating synthetic fuels that reduce the world’s fossil fuel dependence. They realise eliminating it is a lofty option, especially in the near future. Instead, they want to focus on more accessible possibilities that tap into readily available renewable resources. As natural gas demand increases worldwide, there are some sustainability wins for this energy source. For instance, gas-to-liquid plants generate fuels with more complete combustions. This approach reduces carbon dioxide and nitrogen emissions, making it better for the planet.

Another example comes from a University of South Wales team that made synthetic methane, which natural gas primarily contains. Their innovative process involves using light and heat to cause a reaction that makes the CO2 needed for methane. More specifically, they can do it with sunlight and use renewable energy to power the method.

The researchers noted that natural gas remains essential in many industries, such as shipping and transportation. However, since their method relies on sunlight to make synthetic methane, it could represent a major step in making natural gas production more sustainable. One project participant said this option is a much cleaner alternative than fossil fuel-derived precursors for production. Additionally, the potential industrial applications could affect pharmaceuticals, cement manufacturing and more.

Encouraging wider adoption
Manufacturers of synthetic fuels understand they must continually develop and offer products that meet customers’ expectations and reflect trends. Some cite growing public demand as a reason for expanding their assortments and creating blends for specific use cases. That was the case for a multinational petroleum company.

Executives realised that synthetics and synthetic blends most closely met customers’ needs when they shopped for heavy-duty engine oil. However, supply chain challenges also drove the introduction of more synthetic products since components used for lubricant building blocks became harder to source.

Additionally, synthetics have superior oil consumption characteristics and allow equipment users to go longer between changes. Then, even people unfamiliar with these products discover numerous reasons to try them and become convinced to switch permanently.

Some companies make synthetic products for specific vehicle categories, such as hybrids. One motor oil has a particular additive that keeps contaminants away from critical engine parts plus prevents buildup and corrosion. Those advantages help people make smart decisions to prolong the life span of vehicles chosen for their greener perks.

Related innovations have made some trucks and other large vehicles much more sustainable, encouraging more decision-makers to use them. One hydraulic hybrid delivery vehicle got up to 70 per cent better gas mileage than conventional diesel options.

People will be more likely to choose greener vehicles for home and business use if a wide range of maintenance-related products is available for them — including synthetic fuels and oils. When manufacturers keep developing, marketing and creating these products, those activities show potential customers that hybrid and other sustainable vehicles are gaining momentum.

Synthetic fuels will stay relevant
Many people are open to using greener fuels if they feel confident that those options will perform similarly to their counterparts. As these examples show, synthetics can meet that expectation and others, even showing some superior characteristics to traditional products. Those realities should help them maintain marketplace traction, especially since sustainability is becoming increasingly important when people make personal and business-related choices.
